EV tyres and normal tyres look similar, but EV tyres are engineered for the demands of electric vehicles:
• Higher load capacity: EV batteries make vehicles heavier, so EV tyres often have reinforced construction and higher load ratings.
• Stronger wear resistance: An electric motor delivers torque immediately, which can wear ordinary tyres more quickly. EV tyres use tougher compounds and tread designs.
• Lower rolling resistance: EV tyres are designed to waste less energy as they roll, helping preserve battery range.
• Less road noise: Because EVs have no combustion-engine noise, tyre noise is more noticeable. Some EV tyres use specialised tread patterns or internal acoustic foam to make the cabin quieter.
• Grip and handling: Their construction is designed to remain stable under the extra weight while providing suitable braking and cornering performance.
• Price: EV-specific tyres may cost more, although their efficiency, noise reduction and durability can make them worthwhile.
A tyre does not necessarily need an “EV” label to be suitable. The important points are that it matches the vehicle manufacturer’s required size, load index, speed rating and specification. Check the owner’s manual or the tyre-information label on the vehicle before buying replacements.
