The Road Safety Authority at a recent driving instructor meeting mentioned Leixlip as a possible location for a new driving test centre.

Currently learner drivers in Leixlip and surrounding areas have to travel to Mulhuddart driving test centre with a 19 week wait at present. The next closest test centre is Tallaght with a 14 week wait time or a 40 minute drive to Naas.

Please contact your local TD or councillor if you support a driving test centre for Leixlip.

There is still more work to do in reducing the current driving test wait time.

Dublin has an average 15 week wait time.

At end March 2026 there were 388,090 learner permit holders in Ireland.

Between January to March 2026 the average number of driving tests completed across all vehicle categories was 5,586 per week.

The average driving test pass rate across all vehicle category categories for March 2026 was 56.5%.

Allowing for learner drivers to have to repeat the driving test it would take more than 100 weeks to get the 388,090 learner permit holders through the driving test system in Ireland.

This would not include new learner drivers joining the driving test system during the 100 weeks.

We would ask our local political representatives to push for this valuable facility in North Kildare.

There is a lot of confusion about bringing the insurance certificate to the driving test at the moment.

In April 2026 there were 916 driving test applicants who did not show up for their driving test.

There was also 2,411 driving tests abandoned or not conducted.

A total number of 3,327 scheduled driving tests in April 2026 that did not go ahead.
