This is Crystal Owen. In 2023, her son Harvey set off on a trip to Wales with friends. The family were reassured to know a parent would be driving them to a cottage, but as they found out this wasn't the case, it was pure despair.
The truth was that Harvey's 18-year-old friend, Hugo Morris, had just recently passed his driving test. The only driver in the bunch, he would drive them around in the dead of winter on a camping trip. Then came the devastating news that they had crashed - Hugo drove around a bend too fast and came off the road. Harvey drowned when the car flipped onto its roof in a flooded ditch, along with everyone else in the car. Harvey Owen and Wilf Fitchett were 17, while Jevon Hirst was just 16.
Now, Crystal is channelling her grief into saving others before it's too late. She has long campaigned for Graduated Driver Licensing, and has now spoken on BBC Breakfast as it became a reality in Northern Ireland. Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) will apply to all new drivers, particularly those between the ages of 17 - 23. It includes rules such as learners having at least six months of driving experience before taking a practical test and qualified drivers under 24 having restrictions on carrying young passengers at night.
Crystal wholeheartedly agrees with this - and wants this to apply to the rest of the UK. She explained: "It's not a case of whether I think this will work; we know it works. It's been in place in many other countries across the world for decades now; the evidence is there. There is no argument against this law; we know it works."
She called it a 'positive step' that Northern Ireland is bringing the changes, as she added: "With my campaign, I believe the minimum learning period is crucial. At the moment, a young person could have three or four lessons, and that's happened to parents within our group, who have lost their lives, and that is utter madness that a young person can pass a test after a matter of a few hours of learning."
She told presenters Charlie and Naga that she's calling for drivers between 17 and 19 not to be able to carry any passengers 25 and under for the first six months, unless they're accompanied by an older adult.
