Remember to look out for your neighbours, friends and family (elderly or otherwise) over the winter months.

Many people are affected by cold weather and winter storms, but staying warm and healthy during the winter months is especially vital for our elderly loved ones. Seniors are not only at risk for broken bones from falls on ice and breathing problems caused by cold air, they are also at serious risk for hypothermia and frost bite.

Older adults often make less body heat because of a slower metabolism and less physical activity, thus putting them at risk for these serious conditions. If you think an older family member or neighbour may be in need of some help this winter season, even a short, daily phone call can make a big difference.

AA WEATHER WATCH - WINTER WEATHER ALERT
ISSUED: 1415GMT SUN 17th NOV 13
VALID UNTIL: 2359GMT FRI 22nd NOV 13

ELEMENTS: SLEET & SNOW. ICE. FROSTS. TRAVEL DISRUPTION.

This is an updated Weather Alert to the one issued on Friday 15th November

Confidence continues to increase for the country to experience the first taste of winter through the coming week. The change to colder conditions will develop during Monday as a cold north-westerly wind brings showers through the afternoon. These will turn increasingly wintry (hail, sleet and snow) later in the day and overnight into Tuesday. Some accumulations are possible above 200m, with Ulster, Connaught and Leinster at primary risk of the showers at the moment. Overnight frosts and icy patches are possible.

Mid-week sees a brief 'milder' interlude as outbreaks of rain or sleet move across the region. However, a return to colder conditions is then expected later in the week as north-easterly winds develop and bring a mixture of sunshine and a few wintry showers. Overnight frosts and icy conditions will remain a persistent risk.

Some difficult traveling conditions are expected at times and whilst some snow is possible in places, the primary hazard through the coming week will be icy conditions. More specific updates will be issued as the coming days progress but be prepared for a distinctly wintry week ahead.
