🏁 EXTREME TYRES – WHICH COMPOUND IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
One of the most common questions we get asked is which Extreme tyre compound to choose.
The answer isn't always straightforward. It depends on the car, the type of motorsport, track conditions and how much heat you're generating in the tyres.
The softest compound isn't necessarily the fastest!
Here's a breakdown of the Extreme VR2 range, along with the dedicated VR3 wet tyre.
🔴 W3B – SUPER SOFT (0–30°C)
Designed to provide maximum grip at low tyre temperatures.
Ideal for hillclimbs, sprints, short competitive runs and cold or damp conditions where getting heat into the tyres quickly is important.
🔴 R5B – SOFT (15–50°C)
An excellent choice for cooler conditions and shorter competition runs.
Particularly suited to rallycross, hillclimbs, lightweight competition cars and shorter circuit sessions where outright grip is the priority.
🔴 R7B – MEDIUM (30–80°C)
A great all-round competition compound, offering a balance of grip, durability and resistance to overheating.
Well suited to dry trackdays, circuit racing and longer sessions where tyre temperatures are consistently higher.
🔴 R9B – HARD (50–110°C)
Developed to withstand higher operating temperatures and sustained hard driving.
Particularly suited to heavier or more powerful cars, warmer track conditions and longer circuit sessions where softer compounds may overheat.
🌧️ VR3 – FULL WET
A dedicated wet-weather competition tyre featuring a directional tread pattern designed to evacuate water.
Ideal for wet circuit racing, rallying and conditions where standing water makes a semi-slick unsuitable.
⚠️ IMPORTANT – TYRE TEMPERATURE VS AIR TEMPERATURE
The temperature ranges above refer to the actual operating temperature of the tyre, NOT the outside air temperature.
For example, a heavier front-wheel-drive car can generate considerable heat in its front tyres even on a cold day.
Likewise, a lightweight competition car on a short hillclimb might struggle to generate enough heat in a harder compound.
Choosing the correct tyre is about matching the compound to the car, conditions and intended use.
