🇮🇪 Have a foreign driving licence? You may only need 6 EDT lessons instead of 12.
⠀
Already know how to drive, but need an Irish licence? Check whether you qualify for Reduced EDT before planning your training.
⠀
✅ WHO CAN APPLY?
- You hold an Irish learner permit.
- You are resident in Ireland.
- You held your foreign licence for at least 2 years before getting your Irish learner permit.
- Your foreign licence is valid or expired no more than 6 months before you apply.
- Your licence cannot be exchanged for an Irish one.
⠀
📄 WHAT DOES APPROVAL MEAN?
Drivers approved by the NDLS complete 6 mandatory EDT sessions instead of 12 and are exempt from the usual 6-month waiting period before taking the driving test.
⠀
Test appointment waiting times still apply. Show your approval letter to your driving instructor.
⠀
🕒 HELD YOUR LICENCE FOR LESS THAN 2 YEARS?
If you held it for more than 6 months but less than 2 years and meet the other conditions, you may qualify for the waiting-period exemption only. You would still need all 12 EDT sessions.
⠀
🔎 CHECK LICENCE EXCHANGE FIRST
If your foreign licence qualifies for exchange, you may not need EDT or an Irish driving test.
⠀
💡 DO 6 EDT SESSIONS MEAN YOU’RE TEST-READY?
Not automatically. You may need additional practice to adapt to Irish roads and meet the driving test standard.
⠀
📋 WHERE TO FIND THE DETAILS
Search “RSA Reduced EDT” and open the official Road Safety Authority page for eligibility conditions, the application form and required documents.

⚠️ LEARNING TO DRIVE IN IRELAND?
New learner permit rules from 1 November 2026

Know someone learning to drive? Share this with them - it could help them avoid having to start all over again.

🚗 WHAT’S CHANGING?

1️⃣ Getting a 3rd or 4th learner permit
You must have actually taken a driving test within the previous 2 years.
Simply applying for a test or being on the waiting list will no longer be enough.

2️⃣ Your 4th learner permit
It will be valid for just 1 year.

3️⃣ After 4 permits or 7 years
You will generally need to restart the learning process to continue:
• Pass another theory test.
• Apply for a new learner permit.
• Complete all 12 EDT lessons again.

Special counting rules apply to medically restricted permits.

4️⃣ Permit expired for 2 years or more?
You will also need to restart the learning process.

✅ WHAT IF MY PERMIT IS STILL VALID?

It remains valid until its expiry date.
You don’t automatically lose your permit on 1 November.

✅ WHAT IF I’M ON MY FIRST PERMIT?

You can still obtain a second permit without having taken a driving test.

📋 CHECK THESE 3 THINGS NOW

✅ Which learner permit you currently hold.
✅ When it expires.
✅ Whether you must take a driving test before your next renewal.

Parents, partners and employers: a quick reminder could help someone avoid extra costs, repeated training and delays.

Save this post and share it with someone who has been putting their driving test off.

After 10 years of driving in the US, Caoimhe came to Tomek for help preparing for her Irish driving test. We’re so glad she felt at ease during her lessons and enjoyed a few laughs along the way! 😊

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

“Tomek is an excellent instructor. I had to get my Irish license after 10 years of driving in the US, and he helped me break my bad habits and prepare for all the nuances of the Irish driving test. He responds very quickly to inquiries and is flexible for scheduling. He’s also a really nice guy, and has a great sense of humour. He really put me at ease and actually made the whole annoying experience enjoyable!”

🚗 Meet Tomek - the person behind Bright Hill Driving Academy.

If you’ve already had a lesson with Tomek, you probably know what we’re about to say. And if you haven’t met him yet - here’s a little introduction. 👋

Tomek has taught complete beginners, nervous learners, people returning to driving after years away, and learners who came to him after unsuccessful driving tests with their confidence knocked.

Different people. Different stories. But when we read their feedback, the same things come up again and again:

⭐ “From the very first lesson, Tomek was very calm and patient and put my nerves at ease straight away.”

⭐ “He quickly analyzed my driving and instantly identified the exact subtle mistakes and habits that were causing me to fail.”

⭐ “After a failed test Tomek helped build back up my confidence and supported me in passing my exam!”

⭐ “I passed on my first attempt thanks to Tomek!” 🎉

And that probably tells you more about Tomek than anything we could write ourselves.

There’s no judgement when you make a mistake, no pressure to learn faster, and no frustration if something needs to be explained again.

Just calm, honest teaching and someone beside you who genuinely wants to see you succeed.

Because it’s never only about passing the driving test. It’s about becoming a safe, confident and independent driver long after the test is over.

📍 Tomek provides manual driving lessons across Dublin and Cork, including Dublin West, Lucan, Tallaght, Cork City, Mallow, Kanturk and North Cork.

If you’d like to know more about us, have a look through our page, read what Tomek’s students have to say, or visit brighthilldriving.com.

So, for those who haven’t met him yet - this is Tomek. The person behind Bright Hill Driving Academy. 🚗

⚠️ Learner drivers - please be careful when booking driving lessons online

We’re seeing more reports of increasingly sophisticated scams targeting learner drivers in Ireland.

Some scammers are creating very convincing fake driving school websites using Irish-looking web addresses, copied branding and logos, and even genuine-looking Irish phone numbers. At first glance, everything can appear completely legitimate.

Students are then asked to pay upfront for a full 12-lesson package, often by bank transfer or to a personal/international Revolut account. Once the payment is made, contact stops and the student is blocked.

Before paying for driving lessons, take a few minutes to check who you’re actually dealing with:

🔎 Ask for the instructor’s ADI number
Every approved driving instructor in Ireland must be registered as an ADI. A genuine instructor should have no problem providing their details.

✅ Check them yourself on the official RSA register
Don’t rely only on information shown on a driving school’s website or social media page. Names, credentials and even reviews can be copied. Check the instructor directly through the RSA.

📞 Speak to the instructor
If possible, have a normal phone conversation before making a large payment. Be cautious if someone consistently avoids calls and will communicate only through WhatsApp, Messenger or DMs.

💳 Think twice before paying a large amount upfront
Be especially careful if you’re being pressured to pay for 12 lessons immediately, particularly to a personal or overseas account before you’ve even met your instructor.

🚩 Don’t let a professional-looking website be your only proof
Unfortunately, a good website, Irish phone number, social media page or professional logo does not automatically mean the business behind it is genuine.

Take two minutes to check before you pay. It could save you hundreds of euro.

Please share this with anyone currently looking for driving lessons. The more people know what to look for, the harder these scams become.

Stay safe,
Bright Hill Driving Academy 🚗

🚨 A CAR IS COMING STRAIGHT AT YOU ON THE MOTORWAY. YOU HAVE SECONDS. WHAT DO YOU DO?

😳 After seeing what happened in Galway, just a few things I think are actually worth remembering.

👀 LOOK AHEAD
Don’t just stare at the car in front of you. Look much further ahead. If something doesn’t look right, slow down straight away. Don’t wait until you’re 100% sure.

↔️ KNOW WHAT’S BESIDE YOU
Always have some idea what’s around you. Could you move left? Right? Are you stuck beside a lorry? We don’t really think about it until suddenly we NEED that space.

🚘💡 HEADLIGHTS COMING TOWARDS YOU?
If you see headlights where they absolutely shouldn’t be – react early. And don’t assume that driver will avoid you. They might panic and move exactly where you’re trying to go.

⚠️ DON’T TRY TO BE A HERO
As tempting as it might be to try and stop them – don’t. Get yourself and your passengers out of danger first.

📞 CALL 999 / 112
Once you’re safe, report it. If you can, remember the motorway, direction, nearest junction and what the car looked like.

💡 ONE LITTLE HABIT WORTH HAVING:
While driving, sometimes ask yourself:

👉 “If something happened RIGHT NOW, where would I go?”

Sounds simple, but those few extra seconds could make all the difference.

Drive safe guys ❤️

🚨 Important road safety reminder from the RSA.

Wrong-way driving incidents are rare, but when they happen, the consequences can be extremely serious.

If you encounter a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction:
➡️ Stay calm and avoid sudden manoeuvres
➡️ Create as much space as possible
➡️ Once the immediate danger has passed, continue to a safe location off the motorway
➡️ Call 999 or 112 and report the vehicle, location and direction of travel

If you accidentally find yourself driving against the flow of traffic:
➡️ Pull onto the hard shoulder immediately and stop
➡️ Do not reverse, turn around or continue driving
➡️ If safe, leave the vehicle and move behind the crash barrier
➡️ Call 999 or 112 and wait for assistance

Motorway driving can feel repetitive and familiar, but concentration matters at all times.

Stay alert. Look ahead. Expect the unexpected. 🚗
