AUTOMATIC CARS ARE THE FUTURE OF DRIVING

Although cars with manual transmissions are the most common, they're likely to be virtually obsolete in 15 to 20 years.

In Japan and the US, automatics make up 90% of car production, whilst European drivers remains stubbornly at 87% manual with automatics having gained only slightly over the last 5 years.

Reports forecast modest growth in automated cars and conventional automatics over the next five years, accelerating thereafter as 2nd generation automated manuals using double clutch systems.

Though sales of cars equipped manual gearboxes saw a jump this year in the USA, automotive industry reported that 7 percent of vehicles sold this year had the traditional gears, over the next 15 to 20 years, analysts say manual gear boxed cars will be all but obsolete.

So why the predicted change in styles?

Among other things, increasingly efficient automatic transmissions and the onset of more hybrid and electric cars signal the death of manual transmissions.

As more vehicles become hybridized or fully electric, there's just no purpose for manual transmissions.

It also has to do with the dwindling number of drivers who even know how to drive manual, as more new drivers are taught automatic transmissions and are arguably view them as easier to drive.

Manual transmissions generally have better fuel economy than automatics, although that isn't always the case.

Traditionally, cars with automatic transmissions were pricier than their manual transmission counterparts, but again, that's not always the case anymore.

With automatic transmissions levelling the price and fuel mileage playing fields, manuals are decreasingly relevant alternatives for budget conscious car buyers.

One shred of good news for manual lovers is, the sportier models will likely keep a manual transmission option for nostalgia's sake.
