COMPOSITION
Each uncoated tablet contains Albendazole B.P 400mg
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION
Animal studies have shown that albendazole exhibits vermicide, ovicidal and larvicidal activity. Albendazole is thought to exert its anthelmintic effect by blocking glucose uptake by the susceptible helminths: thereby, depleting the energy level until it becomes inadequate for survival ALZEL initially immobilizes; then kills the susceptible helminth. In man, after oral administration, albendazole is absorbed and completely metabolized. At a dose of 6.6 mg/kg of albendazole the plasma concentration of its main metabolite, the sulfoxide, attains the maximum of 0.25 to 0.30 µg/ml after approximately 2 ½ hours. The of the sulfoxide in the plasma is 8 ½ hours. The is essentially eliminated via the urine.
WARNINGS
It has been noted that leucopenia has occurred when used for periods longer than recommended.
INDICATIONS
ALZEL is indicated in the treatment of single or mixed intestinal parasites. Clinical studies have shown albendazole effective in the treatment of Ascaris lumbricids (roundworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm/threadworm), Ancylostomiasis duodenale and Nectar American’s (hookworm), Taenia spp. (tapeworm) and strongyloidiasis stercoral is.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Albendazole is known to be teratogenic and embryotoxic in animals. The safety of albendazole during pregnancy has not been established, and this drug should not be taken by pregnant women at any stage of their pregnancy or by women who are likely to become pregnant, during or shortly after the course of therapy.
SIDE-EFFECTS & SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Gastro-intestinal and headache have been reported.
KNOWN SYMPTOMS OF OVERDOSAGE & PARTICULARS OF ITS TREATMENT
It poisoning or excessive overdosage is suspected it is recommended, on general principles, that vomiting be induced, or gastric lavage be performed, and such symptomatic supportive therapy be administered as appears indicated.
