Fixed the 3inch downpipe to 2.5inch cat not sealing properly issue with these custom cut 5mm exhaust fl**ge adapters. Car was failing lambda while blowing clean everywhere else, likely culprit being this giant exhaust leak. Cut some extras too if any stock cat FD owners need this. 3D scanned and drawn on CAD to ensure proper mating with the gaskets. Direct bolt on without even needing to extend the OEM studs.

A never before seen angle of the car, finally out and about. Not the cleanest RX7 but I wouldn't want any other one over my hand built one. Kind of digging the mismatched bumper, project car style.

A rotary guy’s definition of a weekend kegger.

Also built a couple of tools out of billet, flywheel stopper for that insanely high torque flywheel nut, and coolant pressure test to ensure the coolant seals are set properly (excuse the gauge scale).

πŸ”°NAME CHANGE ⚠️: 100 followers isn't much in today's social media, but never thought I would have 100 followers listen to me share boring posts about a car. So thank you to my first 100 followers, I've met some of you in person and DM'd others, most are rotary fans and owners, but all have been super cool and friendly! Thought I would commemorate this by making my Instagram name a bit more rotary specific. A tribute to the Japanese heritage of this car, thought I would try to JDM it up a bit more with .rotor. Thanks again for listening to me shamelessly sharing car content πŸš—πŸŽ

LONG POST: This was the culprit for the second rebuild. A weak link of the 13B-RE engines is the thin coolant seal walls on the irons. Lack of maintenance to the cooling system will corrode the irons and weaken the walls which at worst will cause this. The cooling system will become pressurized by the combustion chamber and overheat along with a loss of compression in the affected housing. MSP engines although thought to be worse improved on this by putting the coolant seal grooves in the rotor housing instead of the irons.

Although this iron was visually good during the rebuild, the corrosion must’ve weakened the wall and when we heat cycled the engine it blew out the wall and also the brand new coolant seal. In hindsight, given the lack of maintenance history of the car and the browned coolant, we should’ve replaced all the irons, which is what we will be doing the second time around. The things you learn...

I swear our engine ran! This was what happened during the long hiatus, we did get the engine running, however shortly after this it started throwing coolant out the filler and overheated. We removed the spark plugs to test for compression again and immediately saw coolant get shoot out when cranking. It was a super disappointing feeling, but we knew a second removal and disassembly was needed to determine the cause. Confident in our assembly process, we thought it might be another iron water seal wall letting go, the next post I will reveal the findings.

A Public Service Announcement: when purchasing a rotary with unknown maintenance history, cared for by an older man who does not know anything about cars on behalf of an owner who no longer loves the car, expect the worst.

While the original source of the rebuild was carboned up seals causing loss of compression, we found that the front iron had the dreaded broken coolant seal wall. This iron must be replaced as it will no longer seal off the combustion area from coolant, resulting in loss of compression/overheating issues.

In this post, you can see the amount of carbon buildup on the rotors (rotaries need revs!), the front iron's broken water seal wall (rotaries need routine coolant flushes!) followed by our brand new front iron and the completed keg.

In the upcoming posts I will show you the reason why this engine had to come out and be torn down for a second time.

TLDR: rebuilt the engine, installed it and ran, have to rebuild it again.
