The Local Guide to Samos-Part 2: Kokkari 🇬🇷

What are the best things to do in Kokkari, Samos? 🌊

Kokkari may be one of the most photographed villages in Samos, but have you really explored it? 🌊🇬🇷

With its little harbour, colourful fishing boats, white houses and sea on almost every side, Kokkari is easy to fall in love with.

But there is much more to Kokkari than sitting at a waterfront taverna and taking a photo of the harbour.

Here are a few local tips for experiencing Kokkari beyond the postcard:

🔵 Start with the old harbour:

Take your time walking around the little fishing harbour and look beyond the restaurants. Kokkari developed as a fishing settlement, and the old houses and boats around the waterfront still give you a glimpse of that earlier village life.

⛪ Look up at Agios Nikolaos:

The large church of Agios Nikolaos is one of Kokkari's landmarks and stands right in the heart of the village. It was built in the early 20th century and is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the protector of sailors.

🌊 Don't choose your beach just because it is closest:

Kokkari itself has a long pebble beach, but just outside the village are Lemonakia and Tsamadou, two beautiful pine-backed coves with exceptionally clear water. If you're exploring by car, they are easy to combine with Kokkari in the same day.

🏄 Watch the wind:

Kokkari is well known for its wind and has become one of Samos' main spots for windsurfing. Before deciding where to spend the whole day, check which side of the island is more sheltered, sometimes the perfect beach depends on the wind more than the weather forecast.

🌿 Take the road away from the sea:

One of the best things about Kokkari is how quickly the scenery changes once you leave the waterfront. The roads and walking routes lead towards the green interior and villages such as Vourliotes and Manolates. Suddenly, the busy seaside resort feels very far away.

The Local Guide to Samos — Part 1: Pythagoreio 🇬🇷

We’re starting a new series to help you discover the real side of Samos Island, one place at a time. ☀️🌊

Pythagoreio may be one of the most photographed places on the island, but most visitors only see the surface.

Behind the marina, souvenir shops, and seaside cafés, there is a village full of history, hidden corners, and local habits that many people never notice.

Here are a few very local tips for experiencing the real side of Pythagoreio:

🔵 Look for the famous “Blue Street”- one of the small hidden alleys of the village with blue stairs, flowers, and traditional island houses. Most visitors walk just a few meters away without ever seeing it.

🏛️ Pythagoreio was built on the site of the ancient city, birthplace of Pythagoras himself. Under the modern village, there are layers of history dating back more than 2,500 years.

⛪ Early in the morning, walk behind the harbor toward the small churches and quiet residential streets before the cafés fill up. This is when the village still feels authentic and local.

🌅 Many visitors stay only around the marina at sunset. Locals often drive slightly above the village toward Spiliani Monastery for one of the best panoramic views over the harbour and the Aegean.

🍷 A real local experience? Sit at a small café and order local sweet Muscat w**e or Greek coffee.

🌊 Near the harbour, many visitors never notice the small old fishing boats still used daily by locals. Early morning is the best time to see village life before tourism takes over the streets.
