The Real Cost of Ignoring a Small Leak

A small patch of fluid under your car might not seem urgent. But identifying what it is — and acting on it quickly — can be the difference between a minor repair and a major one.
Engine oil: dark brown or black. Low oil leads to accelerated engine wear and, if left long enough, catastrophic engine failure.
Coolant: usually green, orange, or pink. Loss of coolant leads to overheating, which can warp the cylinder head — a very expensive repair.
Brake fluid: clear or light yellow. Any brake fluid loss is a serious safety concern and should be investigated immediately.
Power steering fluid: clear to light brown. Low levels cause heavy steering and damage to the pump.
Gearbox oil: reddish or dark brown. Gradual loss leads to transmission wear and, eventually, failure.

When it fails, it does not give much warning. And when it goes, the engine damage is usually severe — bent valves, damaged pistons, and in many cases a complete write-off.
The good news is that Timing Belt failure is almost entirely preventable. Every vehicle has a manufacturer-recommended replacement interval — typically between 60,000 and 100,000 miles or every five to seven years, whichever comes first.
