What Every New Driver Needs to Know About Car Maintenance

Passing your driving test is a significant achievement. But the test does not include anything about the maintenance responsibilities that come with owning and running a vehicle — knowledge that can prevent breakdowns, protect safety, and save significant money over time.
Here are the fundamentals every new driver should know:
Check your engine oil monthly using the dipstick. The level should sit between the minimum and maximum marks. Low oil is one of the most common causes of serious engine damage in young drivers' cars.
Check your tyre pressure at least once a month and before long journeys. The correct pressures are on a sticker inside the driver's door — not on the tyre itself.
Know where your screen wash reservoir is and keep it topped up. A dry washer system on the motorway is a genuine visibility hazard.

The Real Reason Your Fuel Economy Has Dropped

Almost every driver notices at some point that their car does not seem to go as far on a tank of fuel as it once did. Before assuming the worst, it is worth understanding the most common causes — many of which are straightforward to address.
Tyre pressure is the first thing to check. Under-inflated tyres increase rolling resistance significantly. A set of tyres running 5 PSI low can increase fuel consumption by two to three percent — and many drivers are running considerably lower than that.
A dirty air filter restricts the airflow that the engine needs to burn fuel efficiently. A blocked filter makes the engine work harder, increasing consumption. It is also one of the least expensive components to replace.
Degraded engine oil increases internal friction. Oil that is overdue for a change no longer lubricates as effectively, and the additional friction costs fuel economy.
Faulty oxygen sensors or a failing mass airflow sensor can cause the engine management system to run an excessively rich fuel mixture — burning more fuel than necessary for the power being produced.
And a partially seized brake calliper creates constant drag that the engine must overcome continuously.

Your Handbrake Is More Important Than You Think

Most drivers use the handbrake for one purpose: stopping the car from rolling when parked. But the handbrake — or electronic parking brake on modern vehicles — plays a wider safety role than that, and neglecting it can create problems that only become apparent at the worst possible moment.
A stretched or corroded handbrake cable gradually loses its ability to hold the vehicle effectively. On a slope, a car with a weakened handbrake may creep or roll — a hazard that becomes genuinely dangerous when children, cyclists, or other vehicles are nearby.
On vehicles with rear drum brakes, the handbrake mechanism also serves to self-adjust the drum brake shoes. A handbrake that is never applied allows the self-adjuster to fall behind, resulting in a rear drum brake that operates less effectively than it should.
On modern vehicles with electronic parking brakes, the actuator motors and callipers require periodic servicing to prevent seizing — a particular concern if the system is rarely used.
