"History came full circle on the cobbles tonight, folk." 📜🕯️
We had the absolute pleasure of chatting with Mike, a proper "old boy" who joined us on the walk. Mike went to St Peter’s School—the very same school attended by Guy Fawkes himself.
Even more incredible, back in his schooldays, Mike was taught by none other than John Mitchell — the man who started The World's First - The Original Ghost Walk of York way back in 1973.
We spoke with Mike at length, and he recalled the unforgettable moment when Harry Martindale came to St Peter’s to speak to the boys about his world-famous sighting of the Roman soldiers in the Treasurer's House cellar.
To top it all off, Mike shared his own first-hand encounter from when he was a young man—watching unexplained smoke rising inside the old "New Orleans" bar - now Tesco's, right here on Ouse Bridge.
It’s nights like these that remind us what we’re really about. The stories don't just belong to the past—they live on in the people who walked these streets before us. A massive thank you to Mike for sharing his memories with us.

Here's a little video from last year's Yorkshire Day, about why we all do it!

The Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity is read out each Yorkshire Day at various events, to affirm the continuation of the Historic Ridings and the Historic County.

Tracing back the Ridings to the first likely written record we come to 875 and a reference in the Anglo/Saxon Chronicles to the division of Northumbria, most probably including the Ridings, though not actually stating them. So this was 1,151 years ago.

The Declaration is updated by one year each year and now reads of 1, 151 years standing.

875 plus 1151 is 2026.

If you have joined the walk over the last few decades, you may have wished upon Mark's Lucky Cane.

It was gifted to him by a lifelong friend Ged Sugden.

Ged was someone who gave love and joy to all he met, everyone's friend.

Today we visited The Bingley Arms 953ad , where Ged is the forever landlord, to mark 10 years on from his passing.

Remembered by many and still giving wishes of joy all these years later

All the best
