In wet weather, stopping distances will be at least double that required for stopping on dry roads. This is because your tyres have less grip on the road.

In wet weather:

- You should keep well back from the vehicle in front. This will increase your ability to see and plan ahead.

- If the steering becomes unresponsive, it could mean water is affecting your vehicle's grip on the road.

- Ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

- The rain and spray from vehicles may make it difficult to see and be seen.

- Be aware of the dangers of spilt diesel that will make the surface very slippery.

- Take extra care around pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders.

Itโ€™s Road Safety Week 2025!

Itโ€™s also nearly winter โ€“ as the temperature drops, make sure you're ready.

When driving in winter conditions:
โ„๏ธclear all snow and ice from all your windows
โ„๏ธ ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
โ„๏ธ make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
โ„๏ธ remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
โ„๏ธ check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

Stay safe out there โ€“ and check the Highway Code for more Winter driving advice ๐Ÿ‘‡

Weโ€™re making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. ๐Ÿš—

You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.

As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.

As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:

โœ… reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
โœ… lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
โœ… adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test

These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They wonโ€™t affect the skills needed to take a driving test.

Signals warn and inform other road users of your intended actions. ๐Ÿš—

You should always:

- give clear signals in plenty of time
- use them before changing course
- cancel them after use
- make sure your signals arenโ€™t confusing
- use an arm signal to emphasise or reinforce your signal if necessary

As well as paying attention to your own signals, you should watch out for those given by other road users and only proceed when you are satisfied that it is safe.

Be aware that an indicator on another vehicle may not have been cancelled. ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ

As drivers we should all be aware that any large vehicle (bus, coach, truck, tram etc.) has large blind spot areas, and as such, do not presume they have seen you.
Instead use these top tips.....
Try not to sit in their blind spots.
When you are to the side of them, if you can see the driver in their side mirror, they can see you.
If you are following a large vehicle, if you can't see their side mirrors, they can't see you - so another reason not to follow too close!
Stay safe ๐Ÿš˜
