🚗 New driver in the family? Passing the test is only the beginning.

A driving licence means a young driver has met the minimum required standard — not that they have finished learning. Real confidence comes from experience, judgement and safe habits built over time.

Create a Family Agreement for Young Drivers and agree your own “Rules of the Road” to help them stay safe while they build skills.

- Limit the number of passengers they can take.
- Choose a sensible first car — smaller engines are safer for new drivers.
- Support them in unfamiliar conditions, especially poor weather, darkness or busy roads.

Confidence is not skill.

Talk about it. Agree it. Write it down.

Help your young driver get home safely — every journey, every time.

While some people deliberately take risks, many crashes involving new drivers are the result of inexperience and an inability to cope with challenging situations. They didn't do anything wrong intentionally, they just misjudged.

Tragically, a simple mistake can have life-changing or life-ending consequences for young people on roads where picturesque trees, wildlife and verges disguise unforgiving dangers.

Worried your car may not pass its MOT the first time around❓
Here’s a few things you can check yourself to help you pass first time:
🛞 Check your vehicle’s tyres - the minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm
💡 Make sure all the lights are working
💧 Keep the screenwash, oil and brake fluid topped up to the correct level
🛣️ Change any windscreen wipers that need replacing and make sure that your windows are clean and unobscured
🛑 If the brakes feel spongey, slack or affects your driving when braking, get them seen by a specialist before the MOT
👀 Number plates are clean from dirt and easily readable

Wet weather is sweeping the country – how does this affect braking? 🚗

Highway Code rule 126 explains stopping distances and how much space to leave between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Remember:

Leave a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front – especially on motorways and in tunnels 🛣️

Leave a four-second gap when driving on wet roads 🌧️

Remember: large vehicles and motorcycles need a greater distance to stop. If in doubt, leave a four-second gap 🚛
