A Vespa PX managed squeeze through the workshop for its 20k service, a problem with the clutch and a slight oil leak.
Starting at the front of the scooter, the front disc brake was stripped and inspected, finding the brake pads were at 2mm, brake calliper cleaned, new pads fitted and copper greased applied where required. Calliper fitted back on and torqued down to specifications. Front tyre inspected for any damage but being a new tyre it was in good shape.
Master cylinder lid popped off, fluid inspected for colour and measured for moisture content which was passable.
Brake lever and clutch levers removed, cleaned and greased, the clutch cable was removed and replaced with a new one along with the cable trunnions.
After working through the 20,000 mile service list, the top end was removed to inspect the oil leak which at first seemed to be coming from the base gasket, while the top end was removed the condition of cylinder and piston rings were inspected. A new base gasket fitted, sealed and removal of the exhaust stub for sealing. All built back up, head torqued down to spec and a new NGK spark plug installed.
The carburettor was removed, stripped down and put through the ultra sonic cleaner. Carburettor body checked for warping and finally rebuilt using quality gaskets from SIP and ethanol resistant BGM needle and gasket kit.
The back wheel was removed along with the hub showing the original Piaggio brake shoes. These were removed and the backplate was cleaned up, before fitting the new brake shoes, the clutch cover was popped off. Due to lack of gearbox oil the clutch and other parts were damaged which required the clutch being dismantled and built with fresh oil, a new set of springs, plates and circlip fitted with a new nut and washer, replacing the castle nut used previously.
Clutch reinstalled, new brake shoes on the rear and adjusted.
Engine filled with oil, new fibre washers used on the filler and drain bolt.
All nuts, bolts and screws were checked for torque, marked and tyre pressures checked and test ridden.
The newly bought Vespa reunited back with the happy owner!
