Most Land Rover owners never see the inside of their Haldex unit, but this is exactly where we finding problems.
When this one came in for routine maintenance, we carried out a proper Haldex service and didnβt just drain and refill the oil. We removed the pump and found the tiny gauze strainer completely blocked up with old, congealed oil and debris, despite the vehicle being maintained on schedule.
That little gauze is the pumpβs pickβup filter; once it blocks, the pump struggles to build pressure, runs low on oil then over heats and your Haldex stops doing its job, effectively leaving you in front wheel drive and risking expensive damage. The issue here is that the gauze on the pump isnβt part of the standard procedure that many garages follow, so it often never gets cleaned until thereβs a fault.
At CSN Autos we go a step further on Haldex services. we remove the pump, clean out the gauze strainer and pump body, replace the filter (where fitted) and refill with the correct fluid to the proper level. Itβs a bit more time and effort on a βnormalβ service, but itβs the right way to protect your Haldex systems and avoid big bills later.
If youβve got a Freelander 2, Evoque or any vehicle with a Haldex system and you donβt know when it was last properly serviced, get in touch!
And the worse part, this pump isn't even the most blocked example we have seen!
