How often should you really be checking your mirrors?

Mirror checks aren’t something you do once in a while. They’re something you do continuously, as part of building a constant picture of what’s happening around you.

Good drivers check mirrors regularly, not just before signalling or changing direction. This ongoing awareness means nothing behind them comes as a surprise. Speed changes, closing gaps, or emerging hazards are spotted early.

When mirror use drops, awareness narrows. Drivers react later, feel pressured by vehicles they didn’t notice approaching, and make decisions with incomplete information.

There’s no exact number for mirror checks because it depends on the situation. What matters is rhythm. Scan, assess, drive, repeat.

Mirrors work best when they’re part of your thinking, not just a tick-box check.
