It's been an interesting weekend so far and I still have this afternoon and tomorrow to go! As driving instructors we need to continuously improve our skills, once we pass part 3 therefore, doesn't mean the learning stops! Driving continually changes, no two journeys are the same, no two lessons we give therefore, will be the same.

If you find your learners aren't listening to what you say, they ignore your advice about their test, maybe consider this... It's not them, it's you! It's the way you deliver the lessons, the way you interact with your learners. Yes you may have a high pass rate, but is that enough?

What have you learned this week, this month, this year? When was the last time you took part in some training?

Knowledge is important but so is development. Keep developing yourself so you keep your knowledge up-to-date.

27th September 2026 is fast approaching. If you haven't yet got your ticket for the Intelligent Instructor's EXPO in Solihull, you should seriously consider it, it's FREE after all!

Why not come along and say hello, I'll be on stand 41a, where you can purchase my book at a reduced price and if you're lucky you can also grab a pen too.😊

It's Friday 21st August 2026. Monday will be my first Monday without work, I've dropped from full-time to 4-days per week, plus lessons on the weekend and evenings.

This Monday is full of appointments, the following Monday, will be an official day off after working 7 days a week since returning to work after the pandemic (except for holidays).

I'm looking forward to having one day in the week where I can do things that I want to do. I wonder how long it will last! 🤔🤣

What is your purpose as a driving instructor?

As a driving instructor, I want to help people develop skills and understand how their thoughts affect their actions and decisions. I want to help them become the best driver they can be and be able to continue their development once they are driving their own car with noone beside them. To be a good instructor I feel you need to be completely impartial and non-judgemental.

As a driving instructor trainer I want to revolutionise driver training. Helping people develop their skills by building on the knowledge they already possess to become instructors who want to be curious about their drivers and continually better themselves, in order to create thinking drivers. For this role I need to be completely impartial and non-judgemental

As a driving assessor it's my duty to be impartial, to assess each individual on their ability to remain safe on the road. This is a judgemental role, the most difficult and the one I least like, but do the most.

Why? Because for me it's about road safety. Putting new drivers on the road who are capable of driving in any environment, and of developing their skills throughout their driving career. It's about helping individuals realise that driving is a complex task that requires more than someone telling you what you need to do. It's about ensuring everyone I see is able to keep themselves, their passengers, and other road users safe and have the ability to avoid the actions of other poor drivers.

So many people wanting to become driving instructors are being let down by their training.
If you're thinking of becoming a driving instructor PLEASE do your own research beforehand. DON'T just sign up to a franchise without knowing who your trainer is and what qualifies them to help you.

Make sure you WILL get the following included...
The ability to sit-in and watch the trainer's lessons (if they teach learners)
Ensure they will be sitting in on your lessons on a regular basis.
Blend your training, by this I mean help you understand how each part interlinks to enable you to help learners successfully. So whilst doing part 2 (and part 1), they should be helping you understand how to break down what you're doing into component parts, so you know how to help the learner build on their skills.
Make sure YOU reflect on the sessions you receive and the lessons you give. As a tip record your lessons and watch them back so you can hear the discussions and reflect on them.

Make sure you know EXACTLY what you are paying for, WHAT you will get for your money and WHERE you stand if you can't afford to pay the fees. FIND OUT WHAT IS REQUIRED TO LEAVE THE FRANCHISE.

I've also just released my book Dare 2 Do It - Be a Driving Instructor on Amazon, which has lots of useful information that may be of interest.

The reason I wrote my book was because when I trained to become a driving instructor there were very few books available that provided the information I felt I needed.

I began writing it back in 2018 (though I originally started it in 2016, but lost everything I wrote due to a computer giving up the ghost). It took 8 years to complete as things within the industry have changed considerably and I have learned so much through the various roles I have held and courses I have taken.

I am interested in feedback from my book, so if you have purchased it and it has helped in any way (or not), then please get in touch and let me know.

Thank you ☺️
