🚨 WHAT IS A WET BELT... AND WHY SHOULD YOU CARE? 🚨
If you've got a Ford, Peugeot, Citroën, Vauxhall, Transit or several other modern vehicles, chances are you've heard people talking about "wet belts" and wondering what all the fuss is about
So let's break it down in normal human language... 👇
A wet belt is a timing belt that runs INSIDE the engine and is constantly bathed in engine oil. Sounds clever, right?
Well... in theory, yes
In reality, as the belt gets older it can start to break down, shed material into the engine oil and cause all sorts of expensive headaches
⚠️ Signs of a failing wet belt can include:
• Engine warning lights
• Oil pressure warnings
• Poor running or lack of power
• Strange noises from the engine
• Difficult starting
• Bits of rubber found during servicing
The scary part?
Many wet belts show NO symptoms whatsoever before they fail
And when they do fail...
💸 We're not talking hundreds...
💸 We're often talking THOUSANDS
A snapped wet belt can cause catastrophic engine damage, turning what could have been preventative maintenance into a complete engine rebuild or replacement
⏰ So when should they be changed?
This varies by manufacturer and model, but many are due between 5-7 years or around 70,000 - 100,00 miles but some makes and models are earlier than that!
The problem is that real-world conditions don't always match manufacturer testing.
Short journeys, infrequent servicing, incorrect oil specifications and general wear can all accelerate deterioration
That's why we often recommend not waiting until the absolute limit
✅ Prevention is always cheaper than repair
At Optimum Performance we've replaced countless wet belts and seen first-hand what happens when they're left too long
If you're unsure whether your vehicle has a wet belt, how old it is, or whether it's due, drop us a message with your registration and we'll happily point you in the right direction
Because spending money on maintenance isn't exciting...
But spending thousands on an engine you didn't need to replace is even less exciting 😬
