It’s Mental Health Awareness Week, and while we spend a lot of time talking about mirrors, gears, and reversing maneuvers, there’s one thing that doesn’t always get enough airtime in the cab: what’s going on behind the wheel. 🚛🧠
HGV training is a massive achievement, but let’s be real—it can be stressful. Between mastering a 44-tonne vehicle, navigating tight turns, and the pressure of the driving test, it’s a lot for anyone to handle.
The trucking industry has a reputation for being "tough," but being a pro driver means knowing when to perform a maintenance check on yourself, too.
Why Mental Health Matters in the Cab:
The Learning Curve: It’s okay to feel overwhelmed when you’re starting out. Nobody is born knowing how to double-clutch or navigate a complex roundabout in a Class 1.
Solitude: Long-distance driving can be isolating. Building good mental habits during your training sets you up for a healthier career on the road.
Focus is Safety: A clear head is just as important as a clear windshield. When you feel good, you drive better.
This week, let’s make a deal:
Check in on your fellow trainees. A quick "How's it going?" goes a long way.
Be patient with yourself. If you have a rough day at the training center, leave it in the rearview mirror and start fresh tomorrow.
Talk it out. If the stress is revving too high, chat with your instructor or a mate.
The road ahead is long, but you don't have to drive it alone. Let's keep the conversation moving. 🛣️💬
