So here is one for anyone on the fence or sceptical about the need to buy a stretch gauge… nearing the completion of this 1.6 8V Race Engine today, installed the pistons and tightening the rod bolts, ARP guidance states 50 lb/ft or 5.8 - 6.2 Thou of stretch… applied ARP grease to heads and threads, BUT it took an extra 4 lb/ft to achieve the correct stretch. Where we have space we use a long bar and a 11mm ring end of a spanner..

Looking forward to hearing this engine screaming down towards Avonrise in the Castle Combe Hot Hatch Championship 2026.

Experienced Vintage and Classic Car Technician Engineer Mechanic Responsible for the provision of top quality work on cars ranging from the 1920's to 60's, although the majority of our works are on cars from the 1930's.

The work is varied and diverse from mechanical restoration of chassis, steering, suspension, and brakes to the complete rebuilding of gearboxes and engines.
Due to the age of these cars the work also involves fabrication and machining of parts (rather than simple fitting of new off the shelf parts) so the ability to use lathes and milling machines would be an advantage.

We also get involved with new wiring systems, commissioning of newly built engines, tuning, and trouble shooting, as well as routine servicing and repairs and some minor bodyworks.

Some of our customer cars are used in competition as well as on the road.

Experience in the following would be an advantage:

General Mechanical / Mechanic Car works
Engine Removal, Strip and Rebuilding
Gearbox Removal, Strip and Rebuilding
Machine Shop using Lathes and Mills
Tig and Mig Welding of Mild Steel, Ali, and Stainless Steels
Brazing and Soldering
Auto wiring and testing
Working with SU carbs and general knowledge of four stroke engine tuning and operation

Quite a transformation…. We don’t just do race/competition cars.. in the last few weeks we have done extensive works on three Riley 9 4 seat tourers, and 1 lovely Monaco.. two of which are in new ownership and planned for Trials.. taking bookings from March so give us a ring on 07920 712352

Testing this great sounding 1934 Wolseley Hornet Six before it sails over to the states along with the also great sounding Riley RM 2.5 L Engine. These are just two of many builds ongoing ranging from pre war AC engines, Riley 9’s, two Austin Seven Engines using Phoenix Cranks and some very special parts and upgrades, Riley 12/4 for a very high spec Sprite, A 1960’s Lancia V6, and a full race developed 1.6 8v for a Saxo ready for this season at Castle Combe Hot Hatch..

This might help for those trying to mate an engine with a centrifugal traffic clutch to a pre selector gearbox - problem is the clutch plates move around free unlike a manual clutch so alignment is a nightmare.. so we made up an alignment tool or use an old input shaft, and then wedged the clutch plates in such a way that we could remove the wedges after via the inspection cover….

Another happy customer’s Engine nearing completion, quite a transformation from when we received it.. 1932 Wolseley Saloon Engine which has a few variances from the Specials Engine.. as it is now on shells we have also fitted a modern oil filter as well as feeding oil to the front and rear mains 👌 also RMB Engine also nearing completion ready for test running in our test stand.. we have space for more engine work so please give us a shout with your needs.
