Lets talk lights, and I don't mean blackpool. In the current weather conditions we are 'seeing' more and more people with incorrect lights on.
If its foggy / misty / raining dipped headlights should be used to increase your visibility. If your car has automatic lights they will NOT turn on just due to mist / fog. They only work in the dark. So you need to physically over-ride them and turn them on!
Side lights aka parking lights are exactly that. Please do not use them when driving in fog. Its pointless. "But my car has DRLs (daytime running lights)". This means your car will have small LED lights to the front and probably no rear lights.
FOG LIGHTS:
Use these when visibility is less than 100m. Remember to switch them off when visibility improves as these can be confused with brake lights and can also become dazzling to following traffic. Think about this when deciding whether to use them.
If unsure a good rule of thumb, wipers on... headlights on. Misty / foggy... headlights on.
Remember that following distance, 2 seconds in the dry, 4 in the wet. Fog? Give similar to wet. Why? Like we said above, brake lights can be missed with fog lights on. The fog lights from the car in front won't dazzle you as much by dropping back slightly and due to the fact you probably cant see more than 1 physical vehicle in front you cant read the road as well as usual. Keeping back lessens the need for big sharp brakes.
Out in the fog? THINK... lights!
