🚦🚫 WHITBURN ROAD WORKS 🚫🚦

I’m due to really lose the plot folks! Struggling to get to my learners due to the road closure at one end of the mile straight and the 4 way temp lights at the royal regent end. The ques are ridiculous and making me super late sometimes by up to half an hour which just isn’t ok for hour and a half lessons!

No idea why West Lothian Council thought it was a good idea to do them both at the same time!!

Please bear with me at the minute if this ends up affecting your lesson- I apologize but I promise I'm doing my very best!

Now that all my current learners have new slots to suit this year's college timetables I have a couple of spaces available. Before I advertise them tho there were a few people who had already contacted and I had said to wait until we'd worked round the new timetables. If you guys could send me a wee message to remind me I'll see if we can sort you out x

Your Driving Record Starts Long Before You Pass Your Test

One of the biggest misconceptions I hear is this:

“I’m only a learner, so it doesn’t really matter until I pass.”
It absolutely does.

The moment you get behind the wheel on a provisional licence, you are legally responsible for the decisions you make. Being a learner does not give you an exemption from road traffic laws.

New figures show that more than 192,000 penalty point endorsements were issued to provisional licence holders between 2022 and 2025.

Even more concerning, the number of offences increased by over 44% during that period.

The three most common offences were:

1:Driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

2:Driving without insurance.

3:Speeding.

These are not small technicalities.
Driving without L plates, driving without a qualified supervisor, using a vehicle that isn’t correctly insured or exceeding the speed limit can all result in penalty points before you’ve even passed your driving test.

What many learners and supervising drivers don’t realise is that those penalty points do not disappear when you pass.

They stay on your driving record.
Under the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995, if you accumulate six or more penalty points during the first two years after passing your practical test, your full licence can be revoked.

That means going right back to the beginning.

You must apply for a new provisional licence, then pass both your theory and practical tests again before you can drive independently.

This is one of the reasons I constantly encourage private practice to be taken seriously.

Parents, partners and friends who supervise learners have a huge responsibility too.

Before taking someone out to practise, make sure you understand the rules.

Is the learner correctly insured?
Are L plates displayed?
Do you meet the legal requirements to supervise?
Is the vehicle roadworthy?

Learning to drive is about far more than clutch control, manoeuvres and passing a test.

It is about understanding the law, respecting the responsibility that comes with driving and building safe habits that will last a lifetime.

A driving licence is a privilege.

Protect it before you’ve even earned it.

Today I came across a discussion where someone was asking about driving lessons.

One of the replies proudly mentioned their son passing his driving test after only a handful of lessons.

I just want to gently clarify: while it’s wonderful to celebrate progress, it’s vital that learners gain enough experience before taking to the roads on their own.

As instructors, our responsibility is to help learners build the skills, judgement, and confidence they need to drive safely not just to pass a test, but to handle real-world, unpredictable situations that arise every day.

Everyone learns at a different pace. Some pick things up more quickly, but driving is never just about ticking a box or getting a certificate it’s about being competent, aware, and ready to take responsibility for yourself and everyone around you.

We sometimes hear stories of people passing after very few lessons. What we hear far less often are the heartbreaking stories of serious accidents caused by inexperience accidents that happen every single day and leave lasting consequences for all involved.

Driving is a privilege and a serious responsibility. If something goes wrong because of inadequate preparation, the cost is far higher than the price of a few extra lessons.

As instructors, we follow the DVSA syllabus and tailor the learning journey to each individual.
There’s no set timeline because the goal is not to be the fastest to pass, but the most prepared to drive safely.

At the end of the day, nobody celebrates how few lessons you had if it ends in tragedy.
Safety and competence must always come first.

While I was off on my travels Kieran managed to pick up a last minute test cancellation- and despite having to do it in a hire car that he had never driven before he still went out and aced it with a brilliant drive at Livingston test centre and a well deserved first time pass! Massive congratulations again pal- all your hard work paid off!

“My mate passed after 20 hours.”
“My dad only needed 10 hours.”

You will hear comments like these throughout your learning journey, but they are completely irrelevant to your progress.

Imagine a classroom of 30 pupils. They all receive the same lesson from the same teacher, yet by the end, some will understand everything immediately, while others need more explanation, more practice, or simply more time. That doesn’t make anyone less capable. People learn differently, and that’s perfectly normal.

Think about a running race. Every runner covers the same distance, but they don’t all cross the finish line together. Some finish first, some finish later, but they all reach the finish in their own time.

Learning to drive is exactly the same.

Your instructor’s job is to guide you, challenge you, and help you progress at a pace that’s right for you. Comparing yourself to someone else serves no purpose because no two learners have the same experience, confidence, coordination, or way of processing information.

In my car, I will push you to achieve your potential, but how much I challenge you depends entirely on how quickly you are learning. Every lesson is tailored to the individual sitting behind the wheel.

Don’t worry about how many lessons someone else had.
You will hear comments like these throughout your learning journey, but they tell you nothing about your own progress.

Focus on building strong foundations, developing safe habits, and becoming a confident driver for life.

Take your time.
Learn it properly.

Driving is a lifelong skill, not a competition.
