Winginit Goldwing stuff

Since 1998, GL1800 service works, accessory installation, GPS installs, plus riding Tours of Europe & UK, & friendly advice on anything Goldwing related.

I really enjoy customising and looking after Goldwing GL1800's. We've had Goldwings since 1998 when we bought a new US spec GL1500se, and since then we've had 10 GL1800's. We change them every 2 years or 30,000miles, whichever is first. My work on Goldwings is a hobby that started in 1999 when I was asked by a friend, "would you service my bike too?". Now I get Wing riders from all over the countr

y coming to me for help and advice about their Goldwing. We also arrange Motorcycle Tours, our first Winginit tour was in 2004 to the Lakes & Mountains of Switzerland & Italy, now we run at least one European trip every year and we help others plan their annual trips abroad too. Every tour is planned with GPS navigation for Garmin Zumo and Honda NAVI systems and every daily route includes morning coffee, lunch, afternoon tea, refuels, and the next hotel. It takes AGES to do all the planning but I love doing it so its not a bind :)

Two up check ride, and all went Very well. Our Gen2 Wing might be 8years old but it’s a fabulous ride and as smooth as ever 👍😎👍

Just got our Wing MoT’d for another year. It passed without hiccup 👍
It’s now done just about 53,000, and we did almost 5,000 mile on it last year.
That’s not many miles these days, especially when compared to pre Covid years when we did 15-20,000 per year !!
(I do almost 4,000 miles on my mtb these days, and yes it’s just pedal powered 🥵)

Anyway, before I took the Wing for its MoT I changed the tyres. The front Avon Cobra Chrome had been in for a while and had done around 11,000 miles, the rear was a Dunlop E4 which has done around 4,500 miles - the centre tread was fine but the sides had worn out.
So I fitted another Cobra Chrome on the front along with a Michelin Road W GT on the rear. I’ve had good feedback from all who have rode the Michelin 👍

Should both be fine for our trip across the water this September 👍😎

Here’s a few pics of how the Dunlop had worn. It still gave great grip but I didn’t want to risk it doing a Euro tour with us two and all the luggage 🤔👍

Had a busy couple of days+, doing a Big service and replacing steering head bearings in a 2012 Gen2 1800.
It failed its annual MoT because the head bearing weren’t smooth, and at dead ahead it was notchy.
So I stripped it down, removed the forks, triple tree, etc etc, and installed new roller taper bearings.
Plus I gave it a 80,000 mile service - replaced the air filter, oil & filter, coolant, brake fluids, clutch fluid, final drive oil, spark plugs, and I removed cleaned inspected all the brake pads, replaced front left pads, etc etc
Loads of check & inspects in these big services
Job done, bike runs smoothly, everyone’s happy, and I enjoyed doing it 😁😁👍

I’m pleased to report, Sundays ride back home from Irvine was fine & dry all the way. Hotel to home = 291 miles.
Lovely B roads most of the way and some fab views across the tops following Hadrians Wall on the B6318.
Shame the Sycamore Gap tree isn’t there anymore, due to some numpty with a chain saw 🤬
Coffee at a Starbucks and a refuel in Gretna, then a nice lunch stop in West Auckland, then a quick stop for a comfort break at Ferrybridge before getting home.
Refuel at Tesco Rotherham, pretty good fuel consumption too, 179miles 18.3 litres.
Almost 45mpg 👍
It was a nice weekend 😎

It started raining as I got the Wing out of the garage, and it rained for 276miles 🙄
I enjoy wet riding, it concentrates the mind and it’s a bit more technical than in the dry. One thing to watch out for are those Cattle Grids, especially the ones with the round bars, they’re Very slippy in the wet and we had around 8pairs (16) to negotiate on the way up to Irvine
Our route was a cross country ride using lots of B roads, several miles on unclassified lanes, some single track with passing places, and a bit of motorway to get from Blyth to Ferry ridge.
We ended up filtering for 5 miles because a lane was blocked on the A1 and traffic backed up for miles 🙄

We had 2 full days (3nights) so on Friday we did a 7 mile walk following the rivers into town, then out to the beach, up to the Dragon on the sand dunes, and back to the hotel
On Saturday we rode over to Largs to meet Norman&Jo for coffee, it’s only 20 miles but I did us a 70 mile loop so we could explore the area B roads and do a little single track pass out of Largs

We were lucky on Sunday, the sun was shining when we got up and it stayed fine all day so we had a lovely 290 mile ride home. We followed Hadrians Wall across the hills then headed south.

A very nice long weekend

This Sunday I’ll be checking the Wing over and making sure it’s ready for our ride up to Irvine, Scotland later in the week.
Had a few hours on Basecamp to sort out and create routes for our Garmin Zumo XT, a few years old now but still a brilliant satnav when using Custom routes 👍

The routes up to and from Irvine & Rotherham are around 270 miles each way, and it’s cross country riding could be a long day in the saddle 🤔
Can’t wait 😁😎👍

We’ve had a cracking weekend in the Yorkshire Wolds and North Yorks Moors with some pals.
11 people on 5 bikes and 1 sports car.
We met in Rotherham and rode over to Gainsborough and through the Lincs Wolds, across the Humber bridge to Hull.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Hull Marina and rode over to Wetwang, Hackness, Whitby, back via Sandsend, Castleton, Hutton le Hole, Malton, and South Cave.
Mainly B roads and a few small lanes.
It’s been great 👍👍

Our Wing is one of the last Gen 2 models and has done 52,000 miles now but it’s purring along nicely and it handles just great. We’ve really enjoyed the riding this weekend 😎👍

Good job I checked the Wing over before setting off in the morning, the heated glove socket wasn’t working !😱🤨🤣
It is now, (it was only dirt in the socket), so at least I’ll have warm hands for the ride to and from the NEC for the Motorcycle Show 😎
Will anyone I know be riding there tomorrow ?
I’m meeting Fireman AL at 08.30, Woodall Services, should be at the NEC just before 10 for a coffee before we go in ☕️👍
