18/10/2026

Helping a mum who gave birth in the car park of our Ipswich store inspired our colleague Charmaine to train as a midwife – and after three years at university, including placements at Ipswich Hospital and helping with 40 births – she's now fully qualified.

Charmaine said: "I was just going home and walking across the car park with a colleague when we heard what was going on and went over to help. The dad had just taken the baby and put it on mum. We rang the ambulance and got towels for the baby and waited for the ambulance to come. It was just a beautiful moment."

Charmaine has worked at Asda alongside her studies. She's looking for midwife opportunities, but hasn't ruled continuing in a part-time capacity with Asda. She said: "I sometimes see ladies who I've helped deliver their babies out shopping in Asda and they say to me 'hi, what are you doing here?' Working in the hospital and Asda was such a contrast though. I'd be delivering babies one day and then stacking shelves the next. Everyone at the store is very friendly and they've been very accommodating and supportive of me when I've been studying. It's been really lovely. Customers are really nice too and they know all about my studying."

Robert, the store's produce manager, said: “I’m so proud of Charmaine for balancing her work alongside her midwife course. It’s not easy managing both, and the effort she’s put into it deserves recognition. It’s great to see her working towards something she’s passionate about and I wish her all the best in the future."

As part of the marketing team at Asda, Katie has been helping raise awareness of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign for the last 18 years – and she says its messages of regularly checking yourself and knowing what to look for were critical when she got her own breast cancer diagnosis.

Katie used a guide from Tickled Pink charity partner CoppaFeel! to make sure she was properly checking her breasts. And when she felt a lump during one of her routine checks in September 2024 she knew she needed to get it looked at. She said: "Because I’ve been involved in Tickled Pink throughout my time with Asda I was exposed to all the important messages, so was really good at regularly checking myself and knew how to do it and what to look out for. I use the CoppaFeel! infographic showing how to check properly, including under the armpits. That was crucial because I had such a good routine and good rigour. That’s why I had noticed that change and was able to monitor that. Even before my diagnosis, Tickled Pink added value to my life because I knew to be vigilant."

And after her diagnosis, support from Tickled Pink charity partner Breast Cancer Now made a huge difference: "One of the first things they gave me after my diagnosis was from Breast Cancer Now with all of the terms I was likely to hear and information on what to expect. That gave me a lot of comfort and hope and I felt quite positive going into my treatment. I used the Breast Cancer Now forum during my treatment and met ladies who were in a similar position to me. You feel lonely and like you are the only person in the world going through it, but the forum helped me get through it. And after I had finished my treatment I did the Moving Forward course which is funded by money raised by Tickled Pink. You work out your plan, talk about how you feel, what a new normal might look like and how to find your place in the world again."

Katie returned to work in February and is using her experience, and her marketing expertise, to help other women in a similar situation. She uses her Instagram account to document her experience. She's been directly involved with Tickled Pink this year, including the Kylie Minogue Tickled Pink T-shirt launch. She said: "It’s amazing to work on. When I came back into the business people were a bit reluctant to get me involved with Tickled Pink in case it was triggering for me, but I was like ‘let me at it!’ and couldn’t wait to get involved."

Asda customer Darren has a personal reason for supporting the 30th anniversary celebrations for Tickled Pink – he’s had breast cancer himself. 🎀

Darren said: "Being a being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen.”

13/10/2026

As part of the celebrations for the 30th anniversary of our Tickled Pink breast cancer charity campaign Sam is taking on a "triple no ni**le challenge" to raise awareness and inspire people to check themselves.

At 19, Sam was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy to her chest. While the treatment saved her life, radiotherapy increased their risk of developing breast cancer later in life. She underwent a risk reduction double mastectomy in April 2025 and says that for her, it was the right decision. Now 32, she has tackled the London Marathon, Chase the Sun, a 205-mile cycle ride between sunrise and sunset, and a two-mile Swim Serpentine challenge in London – raising money for our charity partner CoppaFeel!. Sam took on all of her three challenges topless to start conversations, challenge perceptions and show that her body is strong and valid.

She said: "It's liberating! I'm doing them all topless to show off the scars. I want people to be able to advocate for themselves, go to the GP and, seeing my chest, think, 'I should probably check my chest, there's a bit of a lump, go get it checked out. I don't want to get scars like that.' I think it's beautiful, this survivor's body I live in and I'm really proud of it. But I know there'll be some people that feel differently, they might see that and go "I should get that little lump checked" and that's what I'm doing. I've lived through all that rubbish so that I can try and turn it into something good. I wanted to do something bold and brave and give people an opportunity to see it."

Sam also has a message for Asda customers: "Happy 30th birthday to Tickled Pink. What you guys have been doing over the years is amazing. I've been seeing that messaging since I was a kid and you know when Asda turns pink everybody knows about it. It's such a great platform to raise that awareness and raise that message and get people checking their chests and advocating for themselves and raising money for vital things like Breast Cancer Now and everything they do and CoppaFeel! and everything they do. So thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!"

"Being a man and hearing the words 'you've got breast cancer' is a proper, proper shock" – the words of Asda customer Darren, who's a big advocate for our Tickled Pink campaign.

Darren is a regular at our Cannock store's Tickled Pink events raising money and awareness for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel!. He's always happy to chat to customers and colleagues about his experience and offer advice to anyone who needs it. He was diagnosed with grade two invasive ductal cancer in June 2023 after his wife Fiona felt a lump in his chest when he was lying down. She is registered blind and has a heightened sense of touch.

Darren said: "It was just a massive shock. I'd heard of men getting breast cancer, but hadn't really taken it in. It's something like 55,000 woman a year in the UK get breast cancer, for men it's less than 400. It is rare, but it does happen. I think in a way I've been really lucky as from finding my lump to my op it was only six weeks. I am one of the very lucky few who haven't had to have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, I'm just on Tamoxifen for five years."

Asda Cannock community champion Sue said: "It's great having Darren at our events, where he's able to give a male perspective on breast cancer. It really brings it home that breast cancer doesn't discriminate, both men and women can get it."

"Breast friends" Julie, Helen and Pauline from Asda Thornaby are at the heart of the store’s Tickled Pink activity as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. 🎀

They've all had breast cancer and, after recovering well, are using their own experiences to help customers and colleagues recognise the signs and symptoms of breast cancer – raising tens of thousands of pounds for charity partners Breast Cancer Now and CoppaFeel! in the process. 💗

Helen said: "Tickled Pink is amazing and I feel proud to be involved. For me it's all about community spirit and raising awareness and it's come such a long way in 30 years. I hope in the future that everyone will be able to survive breast cancer. Early diagnosis is the key and that's what Tickled Pink is all about.

💗 This year, Sam took on running, cycling and swimming challenges to help raise awareness for CoppaFeel!

After being diagnosed with cancer at 19 and later undergoing a double mastectomy, Sam chose to celebrate her body and encourage others to know their normal.

We're honoured that Sam shared her story as part of Tickled Pink.💕

09/10/2026

The Tickled Pink awareness posters displayed in our St Leonards-on-Sea store played a huge part in our colleague Donna's decision to check herself – and when she did she found a small lump in her breast which turned out to be cancerous.

Seeing those reminders every day helped her to recognise what to look out for and encouraged her to take action. In August last year Donna, who's 46, found a tiny lump, less than a centimetre, just under her ni**le. At first, she thought it might be a harmless cyst, something that would disappear on its own, but after a few days it remained so, with a gentle nudge from her partner, John, she made the decision to visit her GP. A mammogram and biopsies were carried out, and within three weeks she found out she had Stage 1 breast cancer. In October, she underwent a full mastectomy, along with the removal of four lymph nodes under her arm, and then started chemotherapy. She's since made a great recovery and has returned to work.

Donna said: "My mum had breast cancer at about the same age as me so I was kind of aware, but I'm one those people who think everything's okay and never go to a doctor. I see all the Tickled Pink stuff at work every day. The posters are everywhere, even the toilets. You can't miss them. Their message worked as it made me very aware, and so I thought I'd better check myself. I'd like to think that a lot of our customers are seeing the messages too and checking themselves. The earlier you catch things, the easier it is to deal with it. Thankfully I caught mine early, so it was relatively easy to get rid of.

"Tickled Pink is a great charity and it's brilliant in raising awareness. I've always supported Tickled Pink in the store and worn the T shirts, we all do here. Our community champion Wendy always makes sure we are up for it."

To mark the start of Breast Cancer awareness we ran a number of activities across the store over the weekend.

I wanted to give a huge shout out to our three volunteers who came into store to help us fundraise - Beverley and Nadine and Carol.

As part of the big weekend as a store we ran a colleague bake sale in the canteen and a tombola in the foyer on Sunday along with the other fundraising.

Cash has been counted, which has raised £410 in cash donation and over £50 from using the QR code over the weekend.

If you wish to donate via the QR code, I'll share below, so you can click on the link to the store's fundraising page to show your support. This link will remain open till the end of the year:

As you may re call about a month ago, we launched our Cashpot for Schools initiative, which runs until 30th November which you opt into through the Rewards app choosing the local primary you wish to support.

I wanted to give an update on this, - as we get weekly updates on the process of the Cashpot for all schools in the local area. You will be able to see the progress on the school you have chosen within the app itself in the Cashpot section, with a reminder of the count down of the number of days to run. Our Wheatley Cashpot total is currently £1,468.

There is still time to sign up for this. Schools will need to register the bank account details with Parentkind.

Your other cashpots are not impacted by the Cashpot for Schools this is in addition.

We are all excited to announce that Asda rewards have teamed up with our charity partner Parent Kind to run a new exciting initiative 'cash pot for schools' which is our mission to help primary schools across the UK. This will run from 2nd September until 30th November.

You can opt in to the initiative through the Asda rewards app and then every time you shop and scan your rewards app, Asda will donate 0.5% of your total spend to a primary school of your choice.

What’s more we have kickstarted each school’s Cashpot with £50 once they have register for the initiative, and will add an additional £1 to the school pot for every customer who signs up. Just search your school by name or postcode. Please share and encourage your friends and family to sign-up 💚

There is no impact to your other cash pots through stars or missions. Your schools PTA or school need to confirm their details with Parent Kind in order for the donation to be paid to them. However, you can still choose your school and continue to donate, otherwise it will go to schools in need.

Congratulations to Train – a registered charity that aims to improve the lives of young people in Wallingford and Didcot aged 11-18 – who've received an Asda Foundation grant for £1,273.

Funding was used to purchase a bar table, to transform the space where youth services are delivered in central Didcot. This was a critical purchase, as young people were having to sit on the floor when playing card games or doing crafts to engage in these types of activities.

Thanks to Ben and his team who spent the time showing me what TRAIN does and how it benefits young people in the area. I was delighted to help them on behalf of Asda Didcot.

Wehave supported the Listening Centre with a Cost of Living grant for £500. I have met with Sian (their CEO) and fundraiser Clare at one of their sites over the weekend. The Listening Centre are a small local grass roots charity in Oxfordshire, who provides an affordable counselling service to individuals on limited incomes who live in and around Oxford. Counsellors & Psychotherapists in training support the service on an unpaid basis. There are currently over 80k people diagnosed with depression in Oxfordshire, and there were 181 suicides in the last reported year. Sadly, many people who need it are not getting the right help, often as quality longer-term counselling is unaffordable and NHS waiting times are long and the support is time limited to a few sessions.

The Cost of Living grant will help towards the recruitment of volunteers who all need DBS checks to be able to provide counselling, so they are able to continue to provide their services.

Here is one quote from an ex client, to which their work has made a true impact:

“The Listening Centre has been a lifeline for me. Their affordable counselling saved me during a challenging period. The therapists are not just professionals; they are empathetic and genuinely care about your well-being. I highly recommend their services to anyone in need.”

As a round up for this grant round, across Oxfordshire during grant round 3 we have supported the following

A Youth Group (TRAIN) on behalf of neighbouring Didcot supermarketA Primary School (PTA) close to CartertonA Food Bank Service, A Refugee Charity, A Mental Health groupA charity which supports outdoor education and the environmentWe have aimed to support as many diverse groups as possible along with groups we have not previously supported, with 5/6 groups never previously applied for a grant with the ASDA Foundation previously in my time as community champion. You may have seen a few of my recent posts going out to meet these groups in the last week to see how much our funding has made a difference. I have one more group to visit over the next couple of weeks and grant round 3 is due to open in September, so please get in touch to discuss further.

We have supported Refugee Resource who are a local charity based along the Cowley Road in Oxford.

Their mission and aim is for refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants to build meaningful lives as part of the wider community.

One of the ways they do this is through their mentoring programme, where they are matched with a volunteer to support regular meetings over 12 months. The cost of living grant will help contribute towards their DBS checks on applicants before their training.

£500 was awarded to support their work, and I have had the pleasure of meeting with Hannah and Elsie who both work at Refugee Resource and Nazraldin who happy to talk to me about being on the mentorship programme and what benefit it has.

There is a huge need for supporting food banks with help with food insecurity in the Oxford area.

We have been working with Oxford Mutual Aid (based along the Cowley Road) to apply for a £500 grant via the Asda Foundation to help with their food bank operations to help them purchase essential foods to help with their food parcels such as tinned goods.

I went to see their operations at Richard Benson Hall, and helped out for an hour or so with help and met a few of their volunteers. Pictured is Jeremy, Sue and Frayer who were all more than willing to talk about Oxford Mutual Aid and their service.

Thank you to Marion and Wendy who came along to help clean and tidy the Wheatley area as part of our support for the Big Help Out. We concentrated along the London Road towards the A40/M40 and together cleaned up seven bags of rubbish. The area by the A40 (green area) was covered.

I'll plan another for September time, after school holidays so please let me know if you'd like to help.

Our Food Drive took place on Saturday in partnership with the Community Emergency Food Bank (CEFB) in Cowley.

In total in just 4 hours with your help over 9 trolleys of food which greatly help this local charity continue to provide food bank services (from referrals). Thanks for all the volunteers for the food bank and to everyone for their generous donations. We continue to support this food bank throughout the year, with a permanent trolley at the back of the checkouts for you to add donations. In the last year, we have also been supporting Oxford Hygiene Bank, so toiletry items could be added to both. – Linda, Asda community champion
