Repairing textured body panels (caravans, garage doors etc…. I found this process interesting, it’s similar to how I was teaching the HSA apprentices how to reverse a mould in GRP/ make a light lens, but these guys where showing the Axalta process and the results were pretty good, they were repairing a caravan panel dented.

They first made the rubber mould some hours earlier, then when we arrived they positioned this over the dented area and injected the area with the repair resin,

Next several minutes later when the product had nearly cured they removed the jig and the rubber and used a pure thinners to dab around the blend area to make the filler seamless,

I’ve got to say it looked really good and gives you another way to finish a repair, I’m always open to new and different processes especially if they work, well done to these guys! I videoed some of the repair but unfortunately for me it was in German!

I was chatting to Mike at the show here yesterday, he runs his own classic car restoration business alongside teaching young unemployed kids in Holland how to restore classics, this one of one aluminium bodied classic “Simca Figoni” is being restored with plans to take it to Pebble beach, if you like what your seeing please contact Mike and I’m sure he will tell you all about it, he told me he gets no government funding and he really struggles to find sponsors, if you’ve got a few quid to spare contact Mike, not me! One other tip is the students were covering the old leather with this product to bring the leather to life again, when I was at School Road RR they used Hyde food on leather to make it softer. Good luck Mike as I admire your support for the younger generation.

By far one of the best suppliers for chassis alignment kit is gmelin and Molll for their pulling clamps and other kit, this is a family business that engineers and problem solves repairers issues, I could not believe the quality of their clamps etc…. Ian from Wow automotive supplies their kit in the uk but I’ve looked and held lots of Chineesium stuff and this kit is amazing, they even have a 9kg slide hammer, they made a clamp to sort out the VW door hinge adjustment issue too!

We were looking at different measuring systems and there are trammel gauges that record the points and recall them, one of the trammel guages links up to Celette’s data system and records the pre repair and post repair damage at a cost of course! there’s still the tape measure, sprit level, plumb bob, laser line and your eye balls but lots of options for those that want them them

This is a wheel straightening machine from Turkey, it measures to 0.5mm and straightens wheels, the second machine powder coats aluminium onto the the outer wheel scuffs (does not welds them) and they can CNC the face leaving the repair invisible

This week I finished the filler work and painted it, I’m not a painter but thankfully I worked with and know some great painters who are at the end of a phone so thank you to John Collins who gave me a spray gun and Stuart Dingwall who gave me lots of kit and advice, finally thank you to Paul Winsor from HSA/dentz for running me through how he polishes jobs while doing his Smart repairs at https://dentzinc.co.uk/

We took the mechanical apprentices on a field trip today to see Harding Auto Services in Woking where Mike spent a lot of his own time talking about most of fueling issues and why they happen with older set ups as well as turbos before the lads were treated to two different vehicles on the dyno with different IT set ups, the apprentices gave some good feedback and the trip was well worth a visit, the lads got a chance to ask as many questions as they wanted, I was especially impressed with Mike and his team.

If you’ve got running issues please pop in to see them or call them and have a chat, you will walk away after leaving your car knowing it’s going to get fixed. feeling confident in what you’ve been told is normally a worry but not here!
