Here's what to expect on your driving test...

The test is split into 4 parts:

1. 👁 Eyesight check, usually a car registration plate from 20m away..
(Fail this, your test doesn't go ahead)

Bring them glasses🤓

2. Show me and tell me questions 🙋‍♂️
- You will get 1 tell me question at the start of your test.
- Then 1 show me question whilst driving.

3. General driving ability 🚘

- You will drive in various roads and traffic conditions
- You will drive independantly and you will need to follow:

A Sat Nav
Road Signs
Or a combination of both

You will be asked to pull over 3 times:

A hill start
An angled start (move off from behind a parked car)
One normal stop at the side of the road

Also, the possibility of the emergency stop ✋️(1 in 7)

4. Reversing your vehicle ⏪️

You will be asked to complete one of the four reverse manouvres

- Reverse parallel park
- Reverse bay park
- Forward bay park
- Pull up on right side of road, reverse back 2 car lengths

You will be driving for 35 to 45 minutes roughly.

It’s Road Safety Week 2025!

It’s also nearly winter – as the temperature drops, make sure you're ready.

When driving in winter conditions:
❄️clear all snow and ice from all your windows
❄️ ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible
❄️ make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
❄️ remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users
❄️ check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted

Rules for driving in adverse weather conditions, including wet weather, icy and snowy weather, windy weather, fog and hot weather.

Update from the DVSA:

We’re making some subtle but meaningful changes to the practical driving test. 🚗

You may have seen that we have been trialling changes to the driving test at 20 driving test centres.

As part of the trial, learners drove on routes containing more high-speed, rural roads during their driving test, where location allowed. Now, we are rolling out the changes to all driving test centres in Great Britain from 24 November 2025.

As well as increasing the amount of time spent on higher-speed roads, we are:

✅ reducing the number of stops during the test from 4 to 3
✅ lowering the frequency of emergency stop exercises from 1 in 3 tests to 1 in 7
✅ adding flexibility to the independent driving segment, allowing it to run for the full duration of the test

These changes are designed to help improve road safety by better replicating the conditions motorists face in the real world. They won’t affect the skills needed to take a driving test.
