πŸš— MOVING OFF β€” AUTOMATIC ONLY

βœ… UK DVSA STANDARD | Driving School Automatic

Knowing exactly how to move off safely and smoothly is one of the most important things you’ll learn β€” and it’s where so many learners lose marks on test day. Here’s your perfect, test-standard procedure β€” automatic only! πŸš™

βœ… STEP 1 β€” Prepare the car

- 🦢 Press and hold foot brake firmly

- βš™οΈ Select D β€” Drive

- πŸ…ΏοΈ Handbrake applied

βœ… STEP 2 β€” FULL 360Β° Observation

Follow this exact order β€” every single time:

1️⃣ πŸ‘οΈ Left shoulder blind spot β€” turn your head fully left

2️⃣ πŸ‘οΈ Left door mirror

3️⃣ πŸ‘οΈ Interior mirror

4️⃣ πŸ‘οΈ Look ahead β€” front

5️⃣ πŸ‘οΈ Right door mirror

6️⃣ πŸ‘οΈ Final check over right shoulder β€” right blind spot

βœ… STEP 3 β€” Signal & Confirm

- πŸ“’ Signal RIGHT (moving off from kerb into traffic flow)

- πŸ‘€ Check front β€” clear ahead

- πŸ‘€ Interior mirror β€” traffic behind

- πŸ‘€ Right door mirror β€” alongside & right

- πŸ‘€ Final check over RIGHT shoulder β€” last safety check before moving

βœ… STEP 4 β€” Move Away Smoothly

- βœ… Once completely clear all around β†’ slowly lift foot off brake pedal

- βœ… Car creeps forward β†’ apply gentle accelerator only where needed

- βœ… Smooth, steady movement β€” no snatching away

- βœ… Straighten steering as you merge into traffic

- βœ… Cancel signal once safely moving

⚠️ DO βœ… | DON'T ❌

βœ… Check in the exact order above

❌ Skip any mirror or shoulder check

βœ… Signal before releasing brake

❌ Signal too late β€” after moving

βœ… Lift off brake slowly

❌ Lift off brake suddenly

βœ… Gentle gas only when needed

❌ Rev hard or accelerate harshly

βœ… If not clear β€” WAIT!

❌ Move off just because you can

🧠 MEMORISE THIS:

Brake β†’ D β†’ Mirrors β†’ Signal RIGHT β†’ Clear β†’ Off brake slow β†’ Gentle gas β†’ Smooth away βœ…

Learning to drive? Make sure you know how to navigate rural roads. πŸŒ³πŸš—

Last year we made some minor changes to the driving test to make it more reflective of the everyday conditions motorists face.

This means you may spend more time on higher speed, higher risk roads β€” such as rural roads β€” while on your driving test, where location allows.

If you're a learner, make sure you practise driving on a variety of roads, not just town centres and dual carriageways. If you're supervising a learner, it's worth brushing up on your knowledge and skills too.

These roads present real challenges that need to be learned, not just guessed at. βœ…
