🚗 MOVING OFF — AUTOMATIC ONLY

✅ UK DVSA STANDARD | Driving School Automatic


Knowing exactly how to move off safely and smoothly is one of the most important things you’ll learn — and it’s where so many learners lose marks on test day. Here’s your perfect, test-standard procedure — automatic only! 🚙



✅ STEP 1 — Prepare the car

- 🦶 Press and hold foot brake firmly

- ⚙️ Select D — Drive

- 🅿️ Handbrake applied

✅ STEP 2 — FULL 360° Observation

Follow this exact order — every single time:

1️⃣ 👁️ Left shoulder blind spot — turn your head fully left

2️⃣ 👁️ Left door mirror

3️⃣ 👁️ Interior mirror

4️⃣ 👁️ Look ahead — front

5️⃣ 👁️ Right door mirror

6️⃣ 👁️ Final check over right shoulder — right blind spot

✅ STEP 3 — Signal & Confirm

- 📢 Signal RIGHT (moving off from kerb into traffic flow)

- 👀 Check front — clear ahead

- 👀 Interior mirror — traffic behind

- 👀 Right door mirror — alongside & right

- 👀 Final check over RIGHT shoulder — last safety check before moving

✅ STEP 4 — Move Away Smoothly

- ✅ Once completely clear all around → slowly lift foot off brake pedal

- ✅ Car creeps forward → apply gentle accelerator only where needed

- ✅ Smooth, steady movement — no snatching away

- ✅ Straighten steering as you merge into traffic

- ✅ Cancel signal once safely moving



⚠️ DO ✅ | DON'T ❌


✅ Check in the exact order above

❌ Skip any mirror or shoulder check

✅ Signal before releasing brake

❌ Signal too late — after moving

✅ Lift off brake slowly

❌ Lift off brake suddenly

✅ Gentle gas only when needed

❌ Rev hard or accelerate harshly

✅ If not clear — WAIT!

❌ Move off just because you can

Timings: 6:17pm – 8:06pm | ⚠️ PEAK EFFECT: 7:00PM – 7:20PM



⚠️ IMPORTANT ADVICE

WHEREVER POSSIBLE, PLEASE AVOID DRIVING BETWEEN 7:00PM AND 7:20PM
This is when light levels change fastest and glare is strongest.

📅 LESSON RESCHEDULE OPTION
If your lesson falls within this peak time, you can request to reschedule it at no extra cost. Please message us as soon as possible to arrange an alternative slot.

Lessons outside this window will go ahead as planned, with extra safety precautions in place.



❌ STRICTLY DO NOT

- NEVER look directly at the sun – causes permanent eye damage
- NEVER wear eclipse glasses while driving – too dark, severely impairs vision
- NO taking photos, videos or distractions while moving
- DO NOT stop on bends, verges or busy roads – park legally only



✅ ALWAYS DO

- Use sun visor + standard driving sunglasses only
- Switch dipped headlights ON early
- Reduce speed & double your safety gap
- Follow Mirror → Signal → Manoeuvre at all times
- If dazzled: lift off gently, slow down; pull over safely if needed

Learning to drive? Make sure you know how to navigate rural roads. 🌳🚗

Last year we made some minor changes to the driving test to make it more reflective of the everyday conditions motorists face.

This means you may spend more time on higher speed, higher risk roads — such as rural roads — while on your driving test, where location allows.

If you're a learner, make sure you practise driving on a variety of roads, not just town centres and dual carriageways. If you're supervising a learner, it's worth brushing up on your knowledge and skills too.

These roads present real challenges that need to be learned, not just guessed at. ✅
