We’re putting learners in control of their car driving test bookings 🚘

If you’ve got a booking or you’ll be looking for a test soon, make a note of these dates 📅

31 March 2026 – only 2 changes can be made to a booking

12 May 2026 – only learners are allowed to book a test and make changes

9 June 2026 – learners can move their booked test only to nearby centres

By changing who can book car and change driving tests, we’re aiming to reduce the re-selling of driving tests, giving the power back to learners 💪

🚦 DVSA Update: Driving Test Waiting Times – What You Need to Know
The Secretary of State for Transport, Heidi Alexander, has announced new plans to address the ongoing driving test backlog across the UK.
Here is what’s changing and why it matters:
📅 1. Booking System Changes
From spring 2026, only learner car drivers will be able to book and manage their own driving tests.
This aims to stop third-party resellers from bulk-booking and selling tests at inflated.
You will still be able to use the online business service to manage driving tests to set dates and times when you are available to take your pupils for driving tests.

🔁 2. Limits on Moving Tests
Learners will soon only be able to move or swap their test twice, and only within the same area.
This will:
✋ Stop tests being booked in quieter areas and moved later to high-demand centres
☑️ Make the system fairer for local learners
☑️ Reduce manipulation of the booking process

🪖 3. MOD Examiners Helping Out
Thirty-six Ministry of Defence examiners will join the DVSA for one day a week for twelve months to support car driving tests at busy centres.
They will receive extra training before testing the public.

⏳ 4. Waiting Time Targets
The DVSA has confirmed it will not reach its goal of a seven-week waiting time by summer 2026.
Demand remains high despite every effort to increase capacity.
Reducing waiting times continues to be their priority, but the challenge remains significant.
