This **BMW 4 Series** came into us for a full timing chain replacement — one of the specialist BMW jobs we regularly carry out.

The N47 timing chain is located at the **rear of the engine**, so we remove the engine to gain proper access and carry out the job thoroughly.

🚗❄️ AIR-CON FAULT FINALLY SORTED — AFTER MONTHS OF FRUSTRATION

This driving instructor came to Northeast Autowerks after being recommended to us through one of the driving instructor groups.

He’d been having ongoing problems with the air conditioning and had previously taken the car to someone who was highly recommended as an air-con “specialist”. After around 2 months, money spent and lost income while the car was off the road, he was still no further forward.

Air conditioning isn’t something we specialise in, and we were completely upfront about that. However, with the help of our neighbours at Washington Service Centre, we agreed to have a look and see if we could get to the bottom of it.

We started with the basics and found broken wiring going to the A/C compressor clutch. We repaired the wiring properly, but the clutch still wouldn’t engage.

The car was then put onto the air-conditioning machine. The system was showing pressure, but once the refrigerant was recovered, there was only around 25g in the system when it should have approximately 490g.

The system was correctly recharged, but still no compressor clutch.

More testing followed. We supplied the compressor clutch directly and it engaged straight away — and we had nice cold air. That told us the compressor itself was capable of working and the fault was somewhere in the control circuit.

We then checked the three fuses involved in controlling the A/C clutch and found one had failed.

New fuse fitted… A/C working exactly as it should. ✅❄️

Total diagnostic time between ourselves and Washington Service Centre: around 2½ hours.

When we phoned the customer with the good news, he was genuinely confused as to how we’d managed to find and fix the problem in a couple of hours when the previous “specialist” had the vehicle on and off for around two months without getting to the bottom of it.

Unfortunately, this apparently isn’t the first driving instructor to have had problems with the same person. We’ve actually got another vehicle due in where we’ve been asked to investigate and correct previous work.

We’re not posting this to claim we’re air-conditioning specialists — we aren’t. We’re posting it because proper diagnostics matter.

Don’t just keep throwing parts at a vehicle. Test the system, follow the fault and work logically.

A massive thank you to Washington Service Centre for working alongside us and helping get this instructor back on the road with fully working A/C. 🤝
