Recently carried out front and rear brake disc and pad replacement on a customers Volvo XC40. With the vehicle still being relatively new the customer opted for genuine parts supplied from ourselves via the main dealer. Called out to 2017 transit connect that cut out whilst driving and refused to restart. Initial inspection found the timing belt had stripped its teeth due to age/wear. Removal of the rocker cover also identified 2 broken rocker arms. The customer opted to authorize replacement of timing belt and rocker arms in the hope that no internal damage had been caused.

Unfortunately even though the engine ran again following the replacement of the new belt and rocker arms, it was clear there was damage internally due to a severe misfire. Preventative maintenance is absolutely key to avoid potential headaches like this one. We have been super busy since returning from holiday, so much so I’ve struggled to find time to post some recent work. I would like to thank customers old and new for the ongoing support.

Extremely lucky customer this time around. Polo 1.2 TSI with customer concern being EML light on dash and rattle/noise from the engine on start up. Quick fault scan found crankshaft/camshaft correlation codes reaffirming initial suspicion of timing chain issues. With the timing covers removed I expected to find a worn chain/sprocket assembly that had allowed the timing to jump however in this instance the RH chain guide had completely failed and shattered to pieces in the sump. A miracle this vehicle was still driving.

Once the engine had been re-timed and sump had been removed to extract all the broken bits of guide, a new OEM timing chain kit was fitted. Reassembled and retested and no more engine light or nasty noise on start up✅🧰🔧
