Very important changes proposed to navigation being implemented from today 01.04.26….

Today we’re thrilled to announce a trial of Adaptive Grid North - a rotation of Grid North on OS maps, boldly future‑proofed and simplyfing navigation for generations to come.

What does this mean for navigating?

For anyone keen to get ahead and test the new system early… hold your existing map at a jaunty angle, or tilt your head for the same effect. No compass required. And if you do get lost, congratulations: you now have a scientifically approved excuse.

As Dr. Polly Axis, Senior Orientation Specialist at OS, explains: “Our long‑range modelling indicates that aligning magnetic north with Grid North through a proactive macro‑rotational intervention could reduce theoretical navigational ambiguity by up to 0.00003%. The reassurance explorers gain from knowing their map is ‘pointing in the right direction’ for the next century should not be underestimated.”

We thought we were in for a calm day this Halloween, then these guys showed up! It seems they’ve taken one of our training RIBs for a joyride. But fear not, thanks to our RYA training, we know the Solent (and our boats!) inside out. We're on their tail, ready to reclaim our vessel!

We have to give them some credit though. They're wearing their life jackets and have the kill cord attached! Looks like even the supernatural know that safety comes first. Happy Halloween from all of us at Marine Power Training 🎃

With all the rain we’ve had over the last couple of days, you’d almost need a lifejacket and foulies just to pop to the shops. It’s a good reminder that becoming a confident skipper isn’t only about sunny days on the water, but it also comes from the skills and knowledge you build indoors.

Plenty of our classroom-based RYA courses are underway, and with courses like Day Skipper Theory in the diary, now is a great time to get in touch to book a spot ✉️

Hard to believe it’s already been a whole year since Black Knight, our 8.5m twin-engine RIB, joined the MPT family. Since then, we’ve kitted her out with extra seating, including shock mitigation seats and the latest navigation & radar tech from Furuno UK to support students in their powerboat training journey.
