First Driving Lesson Nerves 🚗

Something a lot of learners don’t realise:

Most people feel nervous before their first driving lesson.

Some learners worry about:
❌ Stalling
❌ Holding traffic up
❌ Forgetting everything
❌ Looking silly

But first lessons are not about being perfect.

They’re about getting comfortable, understanding the basics, and building confidence step-by-step.

One learner recently started their first lesson saying:
“I honestly thought I’d be terrible at this.”

By the end of the lesson they were smiling, steering confidently, and already asking about their next lesson.

Confidence usually grows much quicker once learners realise they don’t need to get everything right immediately.

🚗 Roundabouts can feel overwhelming when you’re learning to drive.

A lot of learner drivers struggle because they’re trying to:
❌ Watch every direction at once
❌ Remember signals and lanes together
❌ Judge speed and gaps too late
❌ Panic when other drivers are waiting behind them

The good news?

Most roundabout problems improve once learners understand the basics of signals and positioning properly. 👇

↔️ Signals and Position

⬅️ Taking the first exit to the left:
• Signal left and approach in the left-hand lane
• Keep left on the roundabout
• Continue signalling left as you leave

⬆️ Going ahead:
• Choose the correct lane on approach
• You normally do not need to signal on approach
• Stay in your lane until exiting
• Signal left after passing the exit before yours

➡️ Turning right or going full circle:
• Signal right and approach in the right-hand lane
• Keep to the right until you need to exit
• Signal left after passing the exit before the one you want

⚠️ Bigger roundabouts with extra lanes:
Always check road signs, lane markings, and choose the most appropriate lane early.

One thing we always tell learners:
You do not need to rush roundabouts.

Good roundabout driving is usually calm, planned, and predictable. 🚗

🚗 What Is A Driving Test Swap?

A driving test swap is NOT finding a new test date.

It’s when 2 learner drivers exchange their existing test bookings with each other.

Important things to know:
✔️ Swaps count as 1 of your 2 allowed changes
✔️ You can only swap by phone through DVSA
✔️ Both learners must agree to the swap
✔️ Test types must match
✔️ From 9 June 2026, location rules will apply

Before swapping:
👨‍🏫 Check your instructor is available
📅 Make sure you’re test ready
📞 Both learners must be available for the DVSA call

⚠️ Never share personal information with another learner driver.

🚨 Driving Test Booking Changes – Important Update 🚨

From 12 May, only YOU as the learner driver will be able to book and manage your practical driving test.

This means:
❌ Driving instructors will no longer be allowed to book, change or manage tests on your behalf.

You will need to:
✔️ Book your own driving test
✔️ Manage any changes yourself
✔️ Check your emails and DVSA account carefully

This change is being introduced by the DVSA and will apply to all learner drivers.

If you already have a test booked, make sure:
📧 Your email address is correct
📱 You can access your DVSA booking account
📅 You keep track of any updates or changes

Your instructor can still advise and support you with choosing the right test time and knowing when you’re ready — but the booking itself must now be done by the learner.

If any of our pupils need help understanding the new process, just ask and we’ll happily point you in the right direction 👍

Most learners don’t struggle because they “can’t drive.”
They struggle because they’re trying to think about:

🚗 Steering
🚗 Mirrors
🚗 Gears
🚗 Clutch
🚗 Signs
🚗 Other cars
🚗 What the instructor just asked

…all at the same time.

That’s why lessons can feel mentally exhausting at first.

Driving gets easier when things stop being separate tasks and start becoming second nature.

If lessons feel overwhelming right now, that doesn’t mean you’re bad at driving. It usually means your brain is still processing everything.

And that’s completely normal.
