Wakefield Academy Students get Skills for Life.
Two Wakefield Academy students, Courtney Walshaw and Colby Williamson completed the demanding 19 day Skills for Life at Outward Bound Mountain School at Ullswater last Friday (see picture).
Both had attended a taster course in March 2016, organised through Wakefield District Housing, and were later nominated for a 90% bursary arranged through the Wakefield Outward Bound Associaton. Significant additional funding was provided by Spencer and Broadhead the well known Wakefield garage business headed up by Ray Spencer BEM. Said Mr Spencer "It is great to be able to help when young people are starting out in life and this course will certainly help them grow as individuals. We are delighted they have made a success of their course."
Wakefield Outward Bound Association Chairman Bill Sutton said, " The Skills for Life Course is challenging physically and mentally but the benefits in terms of self awareness, confidence, and self reliance are enormous. The course gives students a big advantage as they progress to college or employment. I drove Courtney and Colby back home on Friday, having seen their presentations at Ullswater the previous evening, and it was clear that they had matured over the previous 3 weeks, worked well with their fellow students, and made some new close friendships."
Wakefield District Outward Bound Association meets 4 times a year and consists entirely of volunteers who through working with schools and youth groups identify young people who will benefit from a range of Outward Bound Courses, they also fund raise and work with other charities, to assist in covering the costs of local students who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend. If anyone is interested in the work of the Association or Outward Bound in general they can contact Bill Sutton on 01924 279836 or email at [email protected].
