The ADI Part Three is your test of instructional ability. It is recommended that you get training for this part of the test from a current ADI. You may have read about the ORDIT register which is the Official Register of Driving Instructor Trainers. There is no legal requirement for an instructor trainer to be ORDIT registered and the register does not guarantee quality training. so as a new PDI you can choose the training that you feel suits you best and will accommodate your needs as a learner. You should ask your trainer about the structure of the training, will it be in car, classroom or a mixture of both. Developing your skills as an ADI requires patience and practice. Finding other local PDIs to practice with is ideal. Continuing to read books such as “Who’s in the Driving Seat” or “From B to A” will help you understand what it means to be client centred and understand the examiner’s expectations of you on the day of your Part Three. If you choose to go onto a trainee licence then you will need a sponsor (a qualified ADI) and must have completed a minimum of 40 hours of training.

The Part Two is your driving test. During this 60 minute drive you will be expected to drive at a high standard. Demonstrating skills associated with advanced driving techniques. It is essential that you speak with, and if necessary, receive training with someone who has not only passed the Part Two but ideally someone who has also taken and passed an advanced driving test. Preferably an ADI who can guide you to be the best you can be behind the wheel. During the assessment you must not commit more than six driver faults and your drive will be on a range of road types with varying speed limits. You will also be asked to complete two reversing exercises. If you are considering becoming an ADI and would like an assessment of your driving, get in touch.

So you want to be a driving instructor? Did you know there are three parts to the qualifying process. To make things easy they are called Part One, Part Two and Part Three. Part One is your theory test. You will be assessed on 100 questions covering a range of topics related to the Highway Code and teaching learner drivers. You will be given 90 minutes to answer questions relating to a) road procedure, b) traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge, c) driving test, disabilities, and the law, d) publications and instructional techniques. Each section has 25 questions and you MUST achieve 85% overall score and 85% in each of the 4 categories. Using apps alone will not prepare you for your theory test. A structured approach to Part One learning can improve your chances of passing the Part One test at the first attempt. For help and advice please contact me.

A wonderful woman died this morning. Her name was Lou Walsh. Many of my friends won’t know who she was but in my industry she was a game changer, a one off and someone I thought of as a friend. She was the driving force behind The Big Learner Relay and raised hundreds of thousands for Children in Need. My thoughts go out to her family and friends today who I know will be devastated. Sleep peacefully Lou and thank you for everything. x ❤️💔
