Another weekend, another adventure 😅

Last weekend we were back on the road after a rare weekend off, and you guessed it… back to Ireland it was!

This time, we would be doing our own little Circuit of Ireland it would seem, with two events on in two different places — the Down Rally taking place in Banbridge on the Saturday, followed by the Galway Summer Rally in Ballinasloe on the Sunday.

Thursday and the weekend got off to a great start when some Glasgow traffic slowed the progress for myself and Robbie, leaving us with just 9 minutes to spare for check-in for the boat 🥴. As we just made it on time to collect Tom, all was well… somehow.

Friday and both Fiestas were scrutineered and ready to go, with only the small (mighty) task of keeping Brian happy and making sure his camper was parked exactly to his liking 📐

Saturday now and Ross and Alan were well on their way to Ballinasloe for scrutineering for Sunday’s event.

Drew Gallagher and Charlotte McDowall would pair up once again in the now familiar Fiesta S2000T. After being given a nominal time on Stage 1 due to an accident, they were already on the back foot. With time to be clawed back, they plugged away all day, only for a sensor issue to stop the car on the final stage. Thankfully, it was only temporary and they managed to make it to the finish, but not without dropping a fair chunk of time in the process 😔

Brian “Red Bull” Watson and Sean Donnelly were back out, mainly to slag the absolute s*** out of each other and, secondly, to do a rally. And there was plenty of the first one, let me tell you 📝🔭👀

Brian was looking to get the better of his fellow Fiesta driver, close the gap and generally improve his speed. There was certainly nothing wrong with his speed when it came to dishing out insults about my service-area parking 😆 However, after all that, they managed another clean run and came out on top of the Fiesta battle. Better than average, some may say 😏

Down Rally done, it was time for Robbie and I to hit the road again, heading for our overnight stop in Athlone. A very nice town, but apparently a town with about three parking spaces, none of which were suitable for a van and trailer anyway 🤦🏽‍♂️ Apologies to anyone trying to park in the train station 😬 With the lads in Galway having both cars ready for the morning, our work was done for the day.

Sunday and both cars were ready to start, thanks to Alan and Ross… which we didn’t hear the end of 🥱

Gordon Morrison and Ashleigh Will were the first of the two cars competing, getting pretty used to these Irish stages by now, that was certainly reflected in the times. Montana must have got out of bed on the right side this time as he was on a mission. Maybe helped by the sushi and wasabi he had for breakfast.“Here Scott, taste that wee sauce.” No thanks, not for me 🤢🥵

Without a drama or a mark on the car, they finished the day 8th overall and 3rd in class. Another great result from the pair.

Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds were back out after their good run at the Jim Clark in May, looking to keep their Stellantis Cup hopes alive with another clean run. Unfortunately, a poor seeding meant they were already on the back foot and, even once reseeded, they still lost a lot of time through missed stages and nominal times. On the stages they did manage to run, however, all was well in the 208. They eventually finished 42nd overall and 4th in the Stellantis Cup. It was smiles all round in camp, especially from Bunny, I’d say, who was absolutely in his element piloting his new camper 😆

Rally done… but myself and Robbie weren’t.

We still had another mission on our hands — a 3hr 30 journey back north for an early morning start on Monday to collect a car for a new customer 👀, before a quick dash back to the boat to meet up with the other two, who had a very chilled Sunday evening in comparison 🙄

Jokes aside, another top job from all the lads involved. Everyone just getting on with the job, no matter how much abuse Brian throws at us 💪🏽🤣

Now, while the weekend may have sounded full of fun and banter, it unfortunately wasn’t.

We, along with the whole of the Scottish rallying community, woke up on Saturday to the incredibly sad news of John Wink’s untimely passing.

A man who we had very few dealings with, but that didn’t matter to John. He was the sort of man who would never walk past you without stopping for a chat. He always had time for a conversation and was just a genuinely nice man. It’s a real reminder that, while we all spend our weekends chasing times, results and the next event, the people within this sport are what make it what it is. Our thoughts are with John’s family and friends at this incredibly sad time.

Here we go again! As always, it’s been quite busy here and I haven’t had much time over the last two weeks to sit down and deliberate over the last few events, but here goes…

First up was a two-in-one weekend headache, with the Pendragon clashing with Monaghan two weeks ago.

Gordon Morrison and Ashleigh Will would take on the fast Monaghan stages in the Mk2 Es**rt. After the cancellation of the previous round, they were keen to get back at it, having not been in the car since Donegal. With the competition across the water as tight as ever, they were right in the thick of it and, with no hassles or dramas, they ended the day 28th overall.

Drew Gallagher and Charlotte McDowall were a bit closer to home at the Pendragon Stages in the Fiesta S2000T. One of Drew’s preferred events, and still getting to grips with the car, the times were very competitive throughout the day. Losing a bit of time on stage 3 with a broken driveshaft, which was a fun job just out of a stage 🥵, they were good to go for the remaining stages and set about trying to claw back some time. Thankfully, there were no more issues or special navigator requests this time, ending the day 8th overall.

Now onto the busy week that led up to the Grampian Rally 😅

The chaos started first thing on Monday morning when Mike’s shell came back from the body shop after the off at the Scottish, as well as getting the other four cars ready and getting the cars back from the previous weekend. With just a few days to get it ready for a test on Thursday, it was all hands on deck to get it rebuilt. Even Plumb Senior was on the tools!

Just like that, Thursday was upon us quicker than I would have liked, and the Mk1 was ready to go. With the ramps down on the trailer, the last sticker was being fitted — timed to perfection, some would say 🥴

Three of the five cars would be testing in two different locations, just to make things nice and easy for us. All crews happy and ready for the next day.

Friday was another manic day of getting cars washed, re-prepped and ready for Friday night’s two stages, which were here before I knew it.

First of the five crews to take part was Craig Rutherford and Ashleigh Will in the Mk2 Es**rt. Keen to put the Scottish behind them — as were we all — and get a strong result, they got the two stages out of the way on Friday night with no hassles, and that theme continued throughout Saturday’s stages. Setting some great times in the ever-competitive 2WD class, they came away with 24th overall and 2nd in 2WD.

Mike Stuart and Clare Fraser were also looking to get the previous event behind them as quickly as possible and move on. However, halfway through stage 1, it wasn’t to be unfortunately, as they rolled, meaning it was game over 😔 Absolutely gutting for the pair of them, but thankfully, and most importantly, they both walked away unharmed.

Next up, Paddy Munro and Andy Stevenson were back out after their great weekend at the Be More Colin Stages back in April. Both were very much looking forward to getting back in the Mk2 Es**rt. Although with Andy and Keri due another baby, and the due date being the Friday of the event, there might have had to be a co-driver swap. Thankfully, baby Alasdair came along earlier than planned and, with all doing well, Andy was given the green light.

The event was a testing one, to say the least, with an issue hampering the car’s power. With the problem eventually solved after some time lost, it was just all about getting to the end and having a good laugh.

Ross Macdonald was back out after retirement number four from rallying 😆 in his newly acquired Evo 9, with Matthew Johnstone alongside. After a good test on Thursday and two clean stages on Friday night, things were all good in camp until the car developed a transmission issue after stage 4, meaning it was game over 😔

Robbie Wood and Steven Brown in the 208 Rally4 would go up against arguably the biggest gathering of 208s that an event has seen for a long time, with a strong field of Scottish and British Championship contenders. Thankfully, the pair had a much smoother event than the Scottish and, with no troubles at all, they ended the weekend 36th overall.

That brings to an end another manic couple of weeks here, and thankfully, it’s a weekend off — in the workshop — this weekend before it’s all go again next weekend for another two events in Ireland. And to the collection of guys and girls that have helped out and done an absolutely fantastic job on these last few events, thank you! You all make my job much easier! 👏🏻

Well… surprise, surprise… we’re still ridiculously busy and, as usual, I’ve fallen behind on the updates! Need to get better at multitasking 🙄

Last weekend saw us making yet another trip across the Irish Sea to what is rapidly becoming our second home this year. I reckon we’re only a couple of sailings away from getting our own mugs in the Stena crew room! Thankfully, this time it was only a short drive after getting off the boat as we headed to Downpatrick for the Carryduff Forklift Rallye Lecale.

Two crews were taking part in this new event: Drew Gallagher and Charlotte McDowall in a Fiesta S2000T, and Brian Watson with Sean Donnelly in a Fiesta R5.

Drew and Charlotte were back out in the very hard-to-miss Fiesta ☀️ and are still getting to grips with the car. The first two stages were hassle-free and everything was going to plan, but on Stage 3 there was a bit of an altercation with a wall, shall we say… 😬
Thankfully, they headed straight into service afterwards, where duct tape and hammers became the tools of choice. Luckily there was no major damage, and we even had time to fulfil the navigator’s requests 👸🏻🧭 The rest of the day was trouble-free and they brought the car home in 33rd place.

Brian and Sean were contesting their first event in the new car. Safe to say there were a few nerves around the camp on Saturday morning, with plenty of pacing about before the start from Brian. Once they got going though, they absolutely loved the switch from the Es**rt to the Fiesta. With no problems or dramas to report, they finished the day in 46th overall.

Onto the Scottish Rally two weeks ago now, where things quite frankly didn’t go to plan… or anywhere remotely close to it.

Mike Stuart and Clare Fraser were back out in the Mk1 Es**rt after missing the Argyll Rally and were looking forward to getting back onto gravel after winning the first two rounds. Unfortunately, their event was relatively short-lived after going off on Stage 2. 😔

Craig Rutherford and Tom Hynd teamed up again with the aim of continuing where they’d left off after Craig winning the previous two rounds. After struggling with the conditions and the car’s handling over the opening three stages, they returned to service for some changes before heading back out. Unfortunately, an electrical issue on Stage 4 forced the car to stop, bringing their rally to an early end. 😔

Robbie Wood and Steven Brown were back out in the 208 and pleased to be back on gravel after mixed fortunes on the tarmac events. They too were chasing maximum points in the Junior category, but a broken steering arm following an impact brought their day to a premature finish. 😔

Safe to say the workshop wasn’t exactly full of smiles after that one! Getting one DNF is bad enough, but collecting the full set in one weekend is a proper kick in the b****. Sometimes that’s just rallying though.

A massive thanks, as always, to all the lads who keep putting in the hard work. It feels like we’ve barely had time to switch the workshop lights off this year, with events coming at us one after another, but everyone keeps grafting away without complaint (just me complaining before anyone says it) We couldn’t do it without you all. More than two hands would definitely help this year!

After a nice weekend off, it was straight back to it and, as usual, needing to be in two places at once! With the Argyll Rally taking place on the same weekend as the Donegal International Rally, with two cars out in both events, it always makes for a bit of a headache 🙄

Dunoon hosted Round 4 of the Scottish Rally Championship, with the two crews taking part: Craig Rutherford, co-driven by Larry Higton, and Robbie Wood, co-driven by Steven Brown.

Craig was looking to continue his winning run from the previous round. The weather on Friday night made tyre choice a bit of a lottery for all the crews, but they seemed to get it spot on judging by the stage times. Building up a healthy lead, they unfortunately lost half of it after suffering a puncture.
Saturday brought more consistent weather, making tyre choice a much easier decision. After clawing back the time lost with the puncture, the focus was simply on getting to the finish without any mistakes — and that’s exactly what they did. Craig and Larry finished the event 9th Overall, 1st SRC 2WD and 1st Challengers. Top job lads 🏆

Robbie and Steven were keen to put the disappointment of the Jim Clark behind them and continue learning the car on tarmac before switching back to gravel. After a steady start on Friday night’s tricky stages, they gradually built their confidence. Drier roads on Saturday helped the boys get back up to speed, and they kept plugging away to secure a trouble-free finish. They ended the event 31st Overall, 3rd in Class and 1st SRC Junior.

Across the water in Ireland, however, things sadly didn’t go to plan.

Our thoughts are with everyone involved in Saturday’s tragic events. It was a truly dark day for the sport we all love so much.

Once again, a top job by all the lads at both events and by everyone in the workshop.

And just like that, four events in a row turned into five 😬
What was meant to be a weekend off turned into a trip to the wee Fife village of Crail, for the Air Tech Integrity Stages

In this business, when the phone rings it’s very hard to say no—especially when it’s a gentleman like Drew Gallacher on the other end. Having just taken ownership of a Fiesta S2000T, our services were required and, with that, I was on the road again. It’s always nice when the journey to a rally is one hour and not one day!

Drew, co-driven by David Crosby were using this event as a test to get used to the new car ahead of next week’s Donegal Rally, with the main challenge being the left-hand-drive aspect, which took a bit of getting used to.
Stage 1 was proof of that, with a tyre being clipped on full lock on the right-hand side of the car, resulting in a broken driveshaft. Driveshaft changed, and both of us covered head to toe in grease 🙄
Due to exiting a lap early, they received a stage maximum, so the rest of the day was spent learning the car and building confidence. For Tom and i it was bleeding brakes at every service 🥵

Weekend 4 of 4 (now 5 😬) done — and a bit of a shorter post than last week! 😅

Last weekend, Jack and I were back across the Irish Sea for the Circuit of Munster Rally.

This time we only had the one car, which made things a bit easier. Taking part was Gordon Morrison and Ashleigh Will in the Mk2 Es**rt, hoping to secure another strong finish in the Triton Showers Mk2 Trophy.

After their recce on Saturday, the stages were looking fairly tricky due to the condition of the roads. Nevertheless, they got stuck in and kept plugging away. There were a few scary moments along the way — including arriving at a chicane completely broadside, and a few spins along the way. Fortunately, they made it to the finish of an event that claimed a fair few victims, ending the day 33rd overall.

That brings an end to the month of May and what has undoubtedly been our busiest month ever, with four events in a row. It certainly hasn’t been easy by any means, but as I said last week, none of it would be possible without the great bunch of lads we have helping out. The effort everyone has put in over the last month has been incredible, and I can’t thank you all enough!
The Employee of the Month prize is in the post 😆🏆

Weekend 3 of 4 in a row was thankfully a bit closer to home, but that didn’t make things any less stressful. A nice short journey to Duns for the Jim Clark Rally.

The week got off to a hectic start after having to repair the damage and re-prep Ross’ car from Carlow’s wall incident, as well as Craig’s car from Sunday’s test day. Add in getting all the other cars ready to leave the workshop on Thursday morning, and it’s safe to say there wasn’t much sleep had last week 😴

Friday morning meant shakedown for most of the crews to get up to speed on the fast Borders lanes. No major dramas for any of the lads, just an unfortunate broken driveshaft for father-and-son pairing Craig and Ian Macivor. The long wait between shakedown and the start of the event at least gave us some downtime.

First crew to tackle the event, and only taking part in the national section, were Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds in the 208 Rally4. Their third event in three weeks, this time competing in Round 2 of the Stellantis UK Cup. Four stages lay ahead on some of the best roads the Borders has to offer, and the times were very impressive until a puncture on Stage 3 set them back. Saturday morning’s aim was to claw back as much time as possible. A quick spring change in service with 10 minutes to go kept things entertaining, but helped them climb back to 24th overall and 2nd in the Stellantis Cup.

Next up were Craig Rutherford and Richard Simmonds in the Mk2 Es**rt, contesting all three days. Friday night would prove tricky, with a sensor failing early on and reducing the car’s power. Thankfully, it was repaired in service and all was well for the remaining two stages. Saturday brought no major dramas at all, using this part of the event to get up to speed for Sunday’s Championship round. They finished Saturday 34th overall.

Sunday was Round 3 of the Scottish Rally Championship. Again, it was a relatively trouble-free run, with speed increasing throughout the day until the clutch developed an issue. Thankfully, they made it back to service for the boys to change before heading back out to make up for lost time. They finished the event 15th overall and 1st in class.

Joe Crawford and Tommi Henderson also competed across all three days in another Mk2 Es**rt. Another local man to the Borders, Joe was keen to get stuck into the stages. Friday night passed with no dramas and a clean run. Saturday morning brought even more confidence in the daylight. All was going well until running a bit wide after a hairpin on Stage 4 and getting beached, but luckily they managed to get back onto the stage with minimal time lost, finishing 41st overall. A clutch change on Saturday night had the car ready to go again for Sunday’s event. Thankfully, there were no more excursions into any ditches, just a cracked engine mount to contend with, but all in all it was a good weekend for the local man, finishing 21st overall on sunday.

Mike Stuart and Clare Fraser were in a slightly newer and more modern-spec Es**rt for the weekend after borrowing the car from Paddy Munro. Friday’s shakedown stage gave Mike his first taste of tarmac in the car, and just two runs were enough to leave smiles on their faces after that baptism of fire.

Onto Sunday and they came straight out of the blocks setting great 2WD times. Time for service, and the only job needing done was cable-tying the wipers to stop them lifting up the windscreen when flat out 😬 On the second-last stage, the car cut out, costing them over a minute. Knowing what the issue was, they just needed to nurse it to the finish, with the problem getting worse on the final stage. Fortunately, they made it across the line, although another minute was lost. They finished the day 24th overall — still a fantastic result considering it was Mike’s first ever tarmac rally and first event in the car (not sure it’ll be the last!).

Craig and Ian Macivor also took part in shakedown on Friday, as this was Craig’s first ever closed-road rally.

Sunday morning and honestly, I don’t know who was more nervous — Craig or Ian 😬 However, off to the stages they went, and the nerves soon settled once the helmets were on (for Craig at least 😆) setting very competitive times considering his lack of experience on closed roads. All was looking good for a strong finish until the car lost drive on the final stage 😤

Robbie Wood and Steven Brown took part in Robbie’s newly acquired 208 Rally4, also competing across all three days. With a bit of added pressure too, Robbie being another local to the Borders, but that didn’t seem to faze him at all. Confidence and speed improved as the weekend went on, finishing the national event 44th overall.

Sunday brought another opportunity to keep getting used to the new car and continue building confidence. All was going well until they went off on the penultimate stage. Thankfully, both lads were okay and unharmed.

Yet again, a massive thanks to all the lads for their hard work in the workshop and on the event. There’s absolutely no way any of this would be possible without everyone’s help 💪🏽

Next up was another trip across the water, this time back to Ireland for the Carlow Stages, with myself and Jack getting the job for this one.

Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds were back out in the 208 after their class-winning run at the Manx last weekend, looking for another strong result in the Stellantis Peugeot Cup. It turned out to be one of the hardest events in a long time when it came to choosing the right tyres, with the weather changing constantly throughout the day.

The first loop was tricky but drama-free. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for the second loop after an overshoot sent the car over a wall and into a field — definitely not plan A for the weekend! That left a fair bit of work to do in service patching up the front end of the car, with even Bunny getting stuck in. Fortunately, there was no major damage done and they were good to go again for the final loop, finishing the event 4th in the Stellantis Cup.

Poor Jack definitely drew the short straw this weekend, driving the van and trailer home himself while I wrote this from Dublin Airport on Sunday night, flying home to try and get ahead of what’s set to be a busy week in the workshop (not helped by the wall 🥴) getting all the cars ready for the Jim Clark Rally this coming weekend.

Meanwhile, Robbie was on testing duties for the second time this year, with Craig Rutherford taking part in the tarmac test day at Dundrennan to get some valuable seat time before this weekend’s Jim Clark Rally. Matt Edwards also sat in to give some driver tuition, and it was nice to hear his kind words on how well the car is set up too! 😁

🇮🇲
First of four events for us in May saw us head for the Isle of Man.

Starting the week off on Wednesday saw Jack touch down on the island on Loganair’s finest pedal-powered plane to get things set up and organised ready for everyone else’s arrival.

Thursday morning, myself, Robbie, Ross and Alan headed for the midday boat to then meet up with Jack, who was flat out (literally) 😴

Scrutineering done, Friday was then upon us, with all four cars ready to start. John and Jamie then touched down on the island ready to assist over the long two days that lay ahead.

Gordon Morrison and Ian Parker were in the Mk2 Es**rt, hoping for a repeat of last year’s result (1st 2WD). A strong entry meant the scene was set for a few close battles. After a trouble-free run on Friday’s stages, they were sitting 9th overall. Saturday morning’s loop brought a clutch issue which slightly hampered the pair. At midday service, it was all hands on deck to resolve the issue. One final loop of stages remained and it was a close battle, with seconds separating those at the top of the 2WD class. The final stage shootout was on, but unfortunately it didn’t go our way by a mere 0.1 second 😩

Still, a fantastic result with 10th overall and 2nd 2WD.

Kyle Adam and Steven Brown were back in the camp in their Mk2 Es**rt. It was their first time competing on this event, so there was a bit of a challenge ahead. As ever though, Kyle got stuck in and the times were very impressive for his first visit to the island. Stage 7 proved entertaining after a spin nearly ended up through someone’s garage door 😬
Adding to the manic midday service on Saturday, the welder was flat out after a cracked link box was spotted.
With all the dramas sorted (apart from touching a wall with the rear of the car on the final loop 🤫), the pair finished 17th overall and 3rd in the Protyre category.

Ross Hunter and Chris Dodds were back together in the 208 Rally4. Again, a strong field of front-wheel-drive cars had entered. Thankfully, the event was drama-free for the pair. Some setup changes and several brake pad changes along the way were all that was required. The pair brought the car home 25th overall and 1st in class & front-wheel drive.

New to the team was Joe Crawford and Tommi Henderson in yet another Mk2 Es**rt. Where do you even start with this man? Never a dull moment and never a shortage of laughs anyway! A man not too bothered about results and just looking for good crack, but still managing to put in some competitive times. After an alternator failure on Friday night, they thankfully made it to service for the lads to change it and all was well again. Saturday’s stages were going smoothly until they unfortunately lost some time after sliding off the road and getting stuck for several minutes. Thanks to the spectators for getting the car back on the road. They ended their weekend 58th overall.

Home time then came, with five of the lads heading home on the washing machine with wings. Leaving myself and Alan to do a bit of sightseeing (inside of my eyelids 😴) before the 8pm boat home. Much to my delight, there was a sleeper cabin left, which gets a 5⭐️ review, meaning I could catch up on some sleep before the journey up the road.

Thanks to all the lads for another top job in the workshop and on the event.
