Important changes from 1 July 2026

Some UK van and light commercial vehicle drivers doing international goods work, especially into the EU, will need to prepare for new tachograph rules.

This mainly applies to vehicles over 2.5 tonnes and up to 3.5 tonnes used for paid courier, delivery or transport work.

From 1 July 2026, in-scope vehicles will need a Smart Tachograph 2 fitted. Drivers will also need to use a driver card and follow EU-style driving time, break and rest rules.

This is not a blanket rule for every UK van going abroad, and some own account work may be exempt.

Operators should check now whether they need:
🔵 Smart Tachograph 2 fitting
🔵 Driver cards
🔵 Driver training
🔵 Compliant schedules
🔵 International operator licence paperwork

At ULTS, we provide practical and supportive training to help drivers and operators understand their responsibilities and stay compliant.

When it comes to load security, responsibility does not stop with the driver. If a vehicle is on the road with an unsafe load, anyone who caused or allowed it can also be held accountable. That includes employers, fleet managers and those responsible for planning or dispatch.

The law covers a wide range of risks, from how a vehicle is used to how a load is positioned, distributed and secured. It is not just about what has happened, but what could happen. Our number one tip is if it moves, secure it! Enforcement bodies do not need to prove that harm was caused. If a situation is considered dangerous or likely to cause injury, action can still be taken.

This is why proper checks, planning and training are essential before any vehicle leaves site. At ULTS, we help businesses understand their responsibilities and improve load safety through practical training. If you have any questions or want to chat about training or compliance, get in touch today.

Driving for work is not just company vehicles. It includes everyday tasks like using your own car to visit a client, pick up materials, or even a quick trip to the post office. These journeys still fall under driving for work, and employers still carry responsibility.

If something goes wrong, you may be asked to show that proper checks, risk assessments and policies were in place, even for employees using their own vehicles. Without clear processes, businesses can be exposed without even realising it.

Driving for work policies and grey fleet checks are essential to protect both your staff and your business. At ULTS, we help organisations put the right systems in place and understand their responsibilities. For compliance advice or training, get in touch today.

Lorry crane work is not forgiving. One mistake with stabilisers, ground conditions, or load control can lead to a serious overturn in seconds, especially on busy sites or roadside jobs.

Safe lifting is about far more than knowing the controls. Operators need proper training in planning, balance, stability, and safe working practice every time the crane is used.

At ULTS, we deliver accredited lorry crane training that prepares operators for real working conditions, helping businesses stay compliant with LOLER and reduce risk.

Lorry cranes have come a long way over the last 40 years.

Modern cranes are fitted with advanced systems, operate in tighter, busier environments, and place far greater responsibility on the operator and often the crane supervisor too.

It is no longer just about lifting a load on and off. Safe lorry crane operation depends on skill, awareness, control, and the right attitude to the equipment.

At ULTS, we deliver accredited lorry crane training built around real working conditions, giving operators the practical knowledge they need to work safely and professionally every day.

Here’s a throwback to Summer last year, the Wealden Business show was a great one for ULTS. We were very happy with how our booth turned out - the roller banners looked great, we had a quiz setup, and even a mini remote control forklift! It was great chatting with everyone at the show and getting to know some local faces.

Forklift category changes came into force in January, and they affect any business operating lift trucks, stock pickers, tow tractors or lorry cranes.

The updated structure means training, testing and certification must now match the machine and environment more precisely. If your operators were trained under the old categories, it is time to review:

-Operator categories
-Training records
-Refresher schedules
-Conversion training needs

ULTS delivers fully accredited, practical training that keeps your team compliant and up to date.

For advice on how the changes affect your business, contact us.
