Important changes from 1 July 2026
Some UK van and light commercial vehicle drivers doing international goods work, especially into the EU, will need to prepare for new tachograph rules.
This mainly applies to vehicles over 2.5 tonnes and up to 3.5 tonnes used for paid courier, delivery or transport work.
From 1 July 2026, in-scope vehicles will need a Smart Tachograph 2 fitted. Drivers will also need to use a driver card and follow EU-style driving time, break and rest rules.
This is not a blanket rule for every UK van going abroad, and some own account work may be exempt.
Operators should check now whether they need:
🔵 Smart Tachograph 2 fitting
🔵 Driver cards
🔵 Driver training
🔵 Compliant schedules
🔵 International operator licence paperwork
At ULTS, we provide practical and supportive training to help drivers and operators understand their responsibilities and stay compliant.
