🚗 2018 Ford Ranger 2.2 — Why a second opinion could save you thousands

This customer came to us after being told by another garage that they needed an oil pump replacement AND a full timing chain renewal — a repair that would have cost them a serious amount of money.

Before we ever start major work, we always carry out our own thorough investigation. Here's what we found:

✅ Oil pressure — checked and within manufacturer specification

✅ Wiring — inspected and all fine

✅ Root cause — a faulty oil pressure switch

One new switch fitted. Problem solved. Customer saved £1,000s.
With the savings, the customer was also able to get sorted:

🔴 ABS warning light — traced to a poor previous repair by another garage. We repaired the loom properly to make sure it won't be a problem again.

🛠️ Gold service — well overdue, now fully up to date

❄️ AC regas — keeping them cool this summer!

A very special visitor at UMS today 💚

This stunning 1994 BMW Alpina B3 3.0 came in for a four wheel alignment with Connor, and what a machine it is! A proper modern classic, beautifully kept, with all the little Alpina details that make these cars feel so special! 😍

We love seeing cars like this come through the workshop, especially when they’re looked after with the care they deserve! 🔧

🚗 BMW X4 in for poor starting and a rough idle…

This one was not just having a “not a morning person” moment.

Technician Iwan got to work diagnosing the issue properly. Fault codes pointed towards the swirl flap actuator and glow plug module, but as always, fault codes are clues — not the full story.

Iwan tested the LIN bus signal with the scope and load-tested the power and grounds. The wiring checked out, but there was no power coming out of the glow plug module.

✅ New glow plug module fitted
✅ Power restored to the glow plugs
✅ Starting issue diagnosed properly

Then onto the swirl flaps. Using live data and a camera, Iwan actuated the swirl flaps and could see they were stuck. Further inspection found the culprit: the arm to the motor had snapped.

A proper diagnosis means testing, proving, and confirming — not just throwing parts at the problem.

Great work from Iwan on this one — another BMW fault found properly and explained clearly.

We’re proud to share that our Director, Edward Cockill, will be speaking at the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event 2026 as part of the Driving Sustainable Workshop Growth session.

Edward will be joining Damian Milling from ALLDATA Europe and Tim Benson from Oldfields Garage Services to talk all things workshop growth, sustainability, efficiency and keeping modern garages moving in the right direction.

🔧 Engine swap complete — this BT van is back in business.
This one came in needing the big job: a full engine change. Not exactly a “quick oil top-up and off you go” kind of day… more like open-heart surgery, but with more bolts and less daytime TV.

Our team removed the failed engine, fitted the replacement, carried out the necessary checks, fluids, testing and final road test to make sure it was ready to get back to work.

Because for vans like this, downtime matters. Whether it’s keeping engineers on the road, deliveries moving, or businesses running, getting the job done properly is what counts.
