π¨ 2006 VW Golf Mk5 PD170 BMN β ABSOLUTE HEADACHE! π¨
This one has been a proper headache from start to finish! π
Customer brought us his 2006 Golf Mk5 PD170 BMN wanting us to remap the car. The vehicle had already supposedly been remapped by another company before the customer purchased it, but it had **never run right**, was producing a **load of black smoke** and the customer had already replaced numerous parts trying to get to the bottom of it.
He also couldnβt even communicate with the vehicle properly using **VCDS**, so the first job was to investigate exactly what was going on before we even thought about tuning it.
We went to take an ECU read and straight away we were met with:
π΄ UPG SW: CUSTOM CODE OFF ???
π΄ No actual software numbers
π΄ No proper software versions
π΄ The file we managed to read was showing as a **NO READ**
π΄ And it even had a **βMonster Tuningβ tag** in the file!
π€ Why would someone hide the original software numbers/version? You tell us!
After a serious battle with this ECU, we tried numerous genuine BMN software versions and unfortunately managed to brick the ECU multiple times during the process. π©
Eventually we found the correct file that would actually write successfully β and thankfully, the car started straight away! π
Even on the completely standard software, the difference was immediate. The car was driving considerably better and the black smoke had disappeared.
The vehicle had also already had:
β DPF physically removed
β EGR removed
β Intake swirl flaps removed
So once we had the ECU communicating properly and the correct base software installed, we applied our Stage 1 calibration with the required software solutions.
The result?
π₯ Car driving around 80% better than when it arrived!
π₯ No more excessive black smoke
π₯ Much better drivability
π₯ Correct software now installed
π₯ Stage 1 calibration applied
BUTβ¦ our job doesn't stop at simply flashing a file. π
While carrying out live-data checks, we noticed the turbo was **not achieving the requested boost**. We were seeing a difference of **over 300 mbar** between requested and actual boost.
So at this point, we're not going to blame the calibration β the data is telling us there's another issue to investigate.
Customer is going to inspect the turbocharger and actuator tomorrow and report back to us.
This is exactly why proper diagnostics and live-data checks are so important, especially when you're dealing with a car that's already had questionable software and numerous parts replaced.
We'll see what we find tomorrow! π§π»
