UK Tyre Law: Tyre tread and the Law

The law requires car tyres to have a minimum tread depth of 1.6mm in a continuous band around the central three quarters of the tyre. The tyre below is clearly illegal and would massively increase the braking distance on wet roads. Stay safe and check tyres regularly.

At a taxi operation in Cardiff we checked 41 vehicles with our road safety partners 🤝

Only 13 vehicles were completely clear of roadworthiness defects.

This tyre is worn below the legal minimum tread depth for this vehicle (1.6mm). The structural cords are also visible and damaged making this tyre dangerous.
