The best and most prolonged sunshine may initially be found across North and West Wales, before brighter conditions extend into Mid and South Wales later. One or two isolated light showers cannot be completely ruled out, particularly over higher ground, but most places should enjoy a dry afternoon.

Temperatures will be noticeably lower than on Wednesday. Western and northern coastal areas should reach around 18 to 20°C, while inland parts of Mid and South Wales generally reach 20 to 22°C. The warmest parts of the South Wales Valleys and the southeast may briefly reach 23°C.

A gentle to moderate northwesterly breeze will introduce less humid air and make conditions feel fresher, especially near exposed coasts.

Overall, after a rather grey start, Thursday should develop into a decent afternoon with plenty of dry weather, improving amounts of sunshine and comfortable temperatures.

This would increase the amount of dry and settled weather, with sunny spells becoming more widespread and temperatures beginning to climb. Some Atlantic cloud or patchy rain could still affect the northwest at times.

Wednesday 29th July - Detailed Forecast

Wednesday will begin on a cloudy and rather murky note across much of North and West Wales, with some low cloud covering the hills and mountains. There may also be a little patchy drizzle around during the morning, particularly across exposed western slopes.

Further south and east, the day should begin largely dry with some brighter intervals already developing.

As we move through the morning and into the afternoon, the cloud should gradually begin to lift and break across much of Wales. This will allow increasingly warm spells of sunshine to develop, particularly across South Wales, the eastern valleys and areas close to the English border.

Temperatures here should climb to around 24 to 26°C, making it feel warm and locally humid during any prolonged sunshine. Cardiff and the eastern side of Wales are both currently expected to reach approximately 25°C.

Further west and northwest, cloud may remain more persistent, although even here there should be occasional brighter spells during the afternoon. Temperatures will generally reach around 19 to 22°C near western and northern coasts.

A few scattered showers may develop or move into Northwest Wales later in the afternoon. These should remain fairly isolated, however, and many areas will stay completely dry. The official Wales forecast similarly expects warm afternoon sunshine, especially in the south and east, with showers possible in the northwest later.

Winds will generally come from the west or southwest and may become more noticeable during the afternoon, especially around exposed coasts.

Overall, Wednesday will bring a slow but worthwhile improvement, with a dull start giving way to a much warmer and brighter afternoon for many parts of Wales.

Current guidance indicates that an area of low pressure may move close to or across the UK, bringing a spell of more unsettled weather. Wales could see outbreaks of rain, potentially heavy in places, together with stronger winds.

The exact track of this system remains uncertain. A route to the northwest of Wales would produce warmer, showery and breezy conditions, while a track closer to the country could result in a wetter and windier day.
