The Engine Killer! 💀

It’s widely known that the N20 engine suffers from weak plastic timing chain guides, which break apart (even on lower mileage examples), sending plastic debris down below…

These small plastic fragments can then block your oil pickup as shown in the photographs, which ultimately leads to oil starvation and a broken engine.

As an engine rebuild is much larger cost to bear, we STRONGLY recommend having your timing chain replaced here at Element Performance.

For £995, we’ll replace the chain, guides, tensioners and hardware using OE parts & consumables, all covered under a 3 year warranty.

We’ll also inspect the guides for missing pieces, and will recommend dropping the sump to prevent catastrophic engine failure. This will include a new sump gasket, OE filter set and an oil service, priced at an additional £795 for non X-drive models, or £1,095 for X-drive examples.

N55 Rod Bearing Issues! 💥

Found in models like the F30 335i, M135i, and M235i, the N55 suffers from a lack of baffling in the oil pan. This can lead to serious oil starvation issues, particularly when the car is driven hard or taken on track.

The solution? Preventative rod bearing replacement, and an upgraded sump baffle to ensure reliable oil pressure and prevent catastrophic starvation.

At Element Performance, we offer upgraded bearings, an OEM oil filter, sump gasket, new OEM hardware including labour, from £1,250. The upgraded MMX Sump Baffle by MMR is available for an additional £495, and we’ll even fit it for free as part of the rod bearing replacement package.

We had this beautiful 420i in today! 😍

Unfortunately it had suffered from the rather common fault of a broken timing chain tensioner guide. These rather brittle components are a renowned weak point in the N20, and can be detrimental to your engine’s health.

Luckily this example was caught just in time, before the broken plastic pieces clogged up the oil pickup, and starved the engine of oil. Just this week, we’ve seen other examples that haven’t been as fortunate, so it certainly pays to be cautious with these, regardless of mileage.
