Removing the DPF and cleaning it off the vehicle is almost always the better option because it allows the filter to be cleaned properly, not just flushed.
Here are the main reasons:
1. Removes ash as well as soot
In-car chemical cleaning mainly softens and removes soot. It does not effectively remove ash, which builds up over time from engine oil additives and is the main reason DPFs eventually become blocked.
2. Cleans the entire filter
An off-car machine cleans the DPF from both directions using controlled water pressure, air and specialist cleaning cycles. This reaches the entire filter core, not just the inlet side.
3. Restores airflow
A professional off-car clean can restore airflow close to the original specification. This helps:
* Improve engine performance
* Restore fuel economy
* Reduce regeneration frequency
* Lower exhaust back pressure

With an off-car clean you can measure:
* Before and after back pressure

Once removed, the DPF can be inspected for:

When is an in-car clean suitable?
An in-car chemical clean can be useful if:
* The blockage is light.
* The DPF is only restricted by soot.
* A forced regeneration has failed due to soot loading.
* The customer wants a lower-cost, temporary solution.
However, if the DPF has high ash loading, repeated regenerations, high differential pressure, or has covered high mileage, removing the DPF and cleaning it on a specialist machine is the preferred repair.
A good way to explain it to customers is:
“Cleaning a DPF while it’s still on the vehicle is like rinsing a blocked coffee filter under the tap. Removing it and cleaning it in a specialist machine is like taking it apart and cleaning every pore properly. The result is a much more effective and longer-lasting repair.”
