Yesterday we left our hotel in Bournemouth to travel a few miles to our first job which was to help out a former suspension customer. The suspension is still going strong but she’s well into her 80’s and owned her Metro from new and is now having problems with garages carrying out work for her. She’s quite particular and wasn’t happy about her choke warning light not working and there being no illumination of the fuel and temperature gauge, also the illumination on the clock was intermittent. The last time she took it to a garage they didn’t fix any of the problems, broke the indicator stalk in the process and then charged her! We don’t normally do other jobs except for suspension but we felt we had to step in and help as she has no one else. When we last looked at a previous dashboard problem for her we noticed the printed circuit tracks to the instrument illumination were in poor condition. We brought a spare instrument cluster we had with the later type of “hard wired” instrument illumination. We removed the cluster from her car and then cut away the portion of printed circuit with the damaged tracks and fitted the hard wired illumination from the other cluster restoring full illumination to the instruments. We found that someone had removed the bulb and holder for the choke warning lamp and not replaced it so we fitted a bulb and holder from the other instrument pack, once refitted all was well and everything worked. We turned our attention to the clock. This turned out to be the bulb and this was replaced. We then had a look at the indicator stalk, removing it and finding someone had “lubricated” it with white spray grease, clogging up the mechanism. We cleared this away with contact cleaner and this improved its operation but it is very worn and floppy so we’ll be fitting a new one on our next visit. She then wanted us to look at an MOT advisory of corrosion within a suspension mounting area. This turned out to be very minor corrosion of the outer front panel near the bottoms of the wings. We will make up some repair sections and weld them in on a future visit. We left with her very happy! From there we travelled to Wareham where we carried out the fitment of a set of recharged Hydragas units to a very nice MGF. The job went well and the customer who is not far off 90 years of age was delighted www.hahsltd.co.uk
