A little update from The Boathouse Café Bar ☕️🍰 We’ve noticed a little bit of confusion recently about what’s currently on offer at the Boathouse, so we wanted to clear things up!

Some months ago now, we made the decision to close our kitchen and move away from serving a full cooked menu. While we’d love to still offer a full cooked menu, the level of demand simply isn't enough to make running a full kitchen sustainable.

Instead, we adapted what we offer. When the Boathouse is open, you can still enjoy hot and cold drinks, cakes, pastries and a selection of delicious, locally sourced light bites – whether you’re spending time at the marina, meeting friends or simply looking for somewhere to sit, relax and enjoy the surroundings.

We completely understand that it can be disappointing to arrive expecting a full meal, particularly if you’ve visited us in the past when the kitchen was open. We hope this helps make it a little clearer what to expect from the Boathouse going forward.

We also need to let you know that, unfortunately, the Boathouse is temporarily closed due to staffing issues. We’re working hard behind the scenes to get things back up and running as soon as we can.

We know this isn’t ideal, and we really appreciate your patience, understanding and continued support while we get things sorted.

We’ll keep you updated and let you know as soon as we’re able to reopen. Thank you for bearing with us! 💙

Sometimes the best summer plans are the simplest. A couple of days away, a good book, morning coffee on the deck, watching the boats drift by as the world slows down for a while.

🌒 Where to watch tomorrow’s solar eclipse near Tattenhall Marina 🌒

Tomorrow evening, Wednesday 12th August, something rather special is happening in the skies above Cheshire as a partial solar eclipse crosses the UK.

Here in the Chester area, the eclipse will begin at around 6:13pm, reaching its maximum at approximately 7:10pm, when the vast majority of the Sun will be covered. ☀️🌑

If you’re moored or staying at Tattenhall Marina, the key to getting a good view is finding somewhere with a clear, open view towards the western sky, as the Sun will already be getting low by the time the eclipse reaches its peak.

📍 Tattenhall Marina
You might not need to go anywhere! Set in the open Cheshire countryside, the marina could provide a beautiful backdrop for the eclipse. Have a wander beforehand and look for a spot with the clearest uninterrupted view towards the western sky.

📍 Bickerton Hill
If you fancy making an adventure of it, head for Bickerton Hill and the Sandstone Trail. At 212 metres, the summit offers fantastic views across the Cheshire Plain and, on a clear day, as far as the Welsh mountains.

📍 The Sandstone Trail
The Sandstone Ridge is one of Cheshire’s best places for big, elevated views, with stretches of the trail around Bickerton and Burwardsley offering wonderful panoramas across the Cheshire Plain. Find a safe, open section with a good view west and settle in for the evening.

📍 Tattenhall & the surrounding countryside
You don’t necessarily need to climb a hill. The countryside around Tattenhall has plenty of open views across the Cheshire Plain. If you know a local public footpath with an uninterrupted view towards the west, that could be all you need.

🌑 When to look up
The eclipse begins at around 6:13pm, reaches its maximum at approximately 7:10pm, and finishes at around 8:04pm. We’d recommend finding your viewing spot well before 7pm.

⚠️ Please view the eclipse safely. Never look directly at the Sun without proper solar eclipse glasses. Ordinary sunglasses are not suitable, even when most of the Sun is covered.

If you're looking for a day out on the water from Tattenhall Marina, one of our favourite cruises has to be the trip to Beeston.

It's one of those routes that reminds you to slow down. Peaceful stretches of the Shropshire Union Canal, beautiful Cheshire countryside, plenty of wildlife, and the stunning backdrop of Beeston Castle appearing as you round the bends.

Take your time, moor up near Beeston and enjoy lunch at The Shady, or stretch your legs with a walk up to the castle if you're feeling energetic. Then simply head back to the marina at your own pace.
