60% of all fatalities occur on country roads. These roads often have sharp bends and blind bends which can hide unexpected hazards. Stay in control and give yourself time to react. Brake before the bend, not on it.

New Drivers at Risk?
Research from road safety charity Brake found that despite 17 to 19-year-olds only making up 1.5% of driving licence holders, they are involved in 9% of all fatal and serious crashes in the UK.
Research found that just over one in five (21.6%) new drivers had been involved in an accident during their first year of driving.
There are various factors that mean young drivers can be more at risk in the first few years after passing their test. These include:
* Risk taking: Young drivers are more likely to take risks when behind the wheel, such as speeding, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol and not wearing seat belts. All of these can lead to or result in a serious accident.
* Over confidence: Whether it’s showing off to friends or simply a trait of being young, many can be overconfident about their driving ability, which is more likely to lead to a mistake and accident.
* Inexperience: Simply lacking experience on the roads means many young drivers will be slower to react to hazards and therefore more at risk.

Certain medicines may affect your ability to drive.
It is illegal to drive if your driving is impaired by drugs, or if you have certain drugs above a specified level in your blood.
If you are taking medicine as directed and your driving is not impaired, then you are not breaking the law.
If you’re unsure whether you can drive safely while taking your prescribed medicine, you should not drive. You should consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Do Community Speed Watch volunteers work? Drivers slow when they see volunteers with hi-vis jackets and a radar gun, but how effective is the tactic in the longer term?

There are several car insurance scams to look out for. Fraudsters know all the tricks for scamming money out of insurance companies. Be wise so you don’t get caught up in one of these scams. A few common tricks include deliberately creating accidents by:
Slamming on the brakes for no reason so that someone smashes into the back of their car.
Signally that you can join the lane they are in and then colliding with you and later denying that they gave you any such signal.
Flashing lights at other cars to indicate they can proceed but then crashing into them.

It is important to ensure that your tyres will be effective in all weather.
Are your tyres safe and legal?
Buying part-worn tyres is not necessarily saving you money.
According to one tyre safety organisation, more than four million drivers a year are buying tyres that have been previously used on another vehicle.
TyreSafe claims buying part-worn tyres isn’t necessarily cheaper. Here’s why. A typical part-worn tyre will have about 3mm of tread. Considering the legal minimum is 1.6mm, that part-worn tyre will only have about 1.4mm of usable tread, meaning 4,000 miles or so of motoring.
A new tyre usually has 8mm of tread – that’s 6.4mm of legal tread, or 18,000 miles of driving.
With all that in mind, TyreSafe estimates that part-worn tyres could cost about £6.33 per millimetre of usable tread compared with just £5.32 per millimetre for a new set.

Don't drive tired.
Studies have shown that drivers don’t fall asleep without warning. Drivers who fall asleep at the wheel have often tried to fight off drowsiness by opening a window, or by turning up the radio. This doesn't work for long.
The facts:-
Research suggests that almost 20% of accidents on major roads are sleep-related.
Sleep-related accidents are more likely than others to result in a fatality or serious injury.
Peak times for accidents are in the early hours and after lunch.
About 40% of sleep-related accidents involve commercial vehicles.
Men under 30 have the highest risk of falling asleep at the wheel.
