Originally installed in Victorian 1865, these wrought iron railings had been over-painted multiple times over the decades, hiding away the beautiful decorative details.

I dont think there is another method available that could give as good a finish as our laser systems, in-situ, in a public area, no chemicals, no damage to the original surface with abrasives

Last night we had the privilege of carrying out a laser cleaning trial on the historic ironwork at the Grade II listed Battersea Park Station in London.

Dating back to around 1866–67, this decorative cast-iron work is approximately 160 years old and includes the distinctive fleur-de-lis finials and ornate floral panels that form part of the station's original Victorian detailing.

Over the decades, repeated repainting has buried much of the original definition beneath numerous layers of heavy coatings. Our trial involved carefully laser stripping selected areas back to the original cast iron to establish what could be achieved without abrasive blasting or mechanically removing the detail from these historic castings.

The results were fantastic. Once the coating build-up was removed, the original texture, definition and craftsmanship of the Victorian castings became visible again — details that had been hidden beneath paint for generations.

There's something pretty special about uncovering ironwork that was made nearly 160 years ago and seeing the original detail underneath for the first time in decades.

Back home and attempt to get a few hours sleep, then back out to Battersea train station for a night shift for a Network Rail sub-contractor💪
