COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THE DRIVING TEST

🚫 Myth 1: Examiners Have a Pass Quota
✅ Fact: There is no pass or fail quota. Examiners assess each candidate based on their performance during the test. If you meet the required standard, you pass simple as that.

🚫 Myth 2: Stalling Means Automatic Failure
✅ Fact: Stalling isn’t an automatic fail. It’s how you handle the situation that matters. If you stall but recover quickly and safely, it’s typically marked as a driver fault.

🚫 Myth 3: Crossing Hands on the Steering Wheel Leads to Failure
✅ Fact: Crossing your hands while steering isn’t a fault in itself. Examiners look for safe and controlled steering, regardless of hand position.

🚫 Myth 4: You Must Drive at the Speed Limit at All Times
✅ Fact: Speed limits are maximums, not targets. Driving at a speed appropriate for the road and conditions is key.
Driving too fast or too slow can both be faults.

🚫 Myth 5: Exaggerated Head Movements Show You’re Checking Mirrors
✅ Fact: Examiners are trained to notice subtle mirror checks. Over-exaggerating head movements isn’t necessary and can be distracting.

🚫 Myth 6: Taking the Test at Certain Times Increases Chances of Passing
✅ Fact: There’s no evidence that test timing affects outcomes. Being well-prepared and confident is the best strategy, regardless of the time of day.

🚫 Myth 7: Examiners Want You to Take a Specific Route
✅ Fact: While certain routes are commonly used, examiners can vary the test route. Familiarity with various road types and conditions is more beneficial than memorizing a specific path.

🚫 Myth 8: Driving Slowly Shows You’re a Careful Driver
✅ Fact: Driving significantly below the speed limit without reason can be seen as a lack of confidence and may disrupt traffic flow.

🚫 Myth 9: You Automatically Fail If You Take a Wrong Turn
✅ Fact: Taking a wrong turn isn’t an automatic fail. Examiners assess your ability to drive safely, not your navigation skills.

🚫 Myth 10: Male Learners Pass More Easily Than Female Learners
✅ Fact: Pass rates can vary, but success depends on individual preparation and performance, not gender.

By understanding the facts, you’re better prepared to approach your driving test with confidence.
Don’t let myths hold you back focus on safe and informed driving practices.

Remember, staying informed and practicing safe driving habits are key to success.

Let’s leave these myths behind and focus on what truly matters on the road.

Erie Insurance ERIE INSURANCE — WHAT HAS CHANGED?

For years, I recommended Erie Insurance and North Carolina Farm Bureau to my customers. Unfortunately, based on my recent professional experiences, I can no longer recommend Erie with the same confidence.

Erie continues to disappoint me by pushing back on proper vehicle repairs and undervaluing customers’ vehicles through CCC valuation reports.

Even more concerning is what happens when customers invoke their contractual right to the appraisal clause.

In my experience, Erie continues to select appraisers whom I consider combative, unprofessional, and unwilling to compromise. Rather than working toward fair and amicable resolutions, they seem more interested in controlling the process and defending the insurance company’s position.

Here’s my question: When an insurance company receives repeated complaints about its appraisers, why does it continue using them?

Something has changed at Erie. In my professional opinion, they are not the company I once recommended.

So who would I recommend?

For everyday automobile insurance in North Carolina, North Carolina Farm Bureau remains one of the few mainstream companies I feel comfortable recommending.

For premium coverage, I highly recommend considering Chubb, PURE, and AIG’s high-end insurance offerings. You’ll generally pay higher premiums, but quality coverage and claims service matter when you suffer a loss.

My opinions are based on years of firsthand experience handling insurance claims, vehicle valuations, and appraisal disputes.

My advice? Don’t choose insurance based solely on the premium. The true test of an insurance company comes when it’s time to pay a claim.

I sincerely hope Erie returns to the standards that once earned my recommendation.

Never trust the company that owes you money to determine how much money they owe you.

Borrowed from another driving instructor

'How many hours will it take for me to pass my driving test'. This is something I get asked all the timeB.

And the truth is I don't know. How quickly do you learn? How quickly can you apply the skills I help you develop yourself?

It goes back to the old saying, how long is a piece of string. It is always based on the individual.

The more practice you get between your weekly lessons, the more experience you get, the better chance you have at dealing with stuff yourself.

I once had a lad pass after 18 hours of lessons, but he drove everyday with his Mam to college and back, to the shops and then to random places. He was quite the practical person, I'd go through how to deal with something. He could do it pretty quickly.

I had someone take 60 hours but they didn't have the opportunity to practice between lessons and they openly admit they weren't the most practical person but were suited more to the theory side.

There are alot of variables. The best advice I can give you is to not compare yourself to other people, it takes however long it takes you to become competent.

Booked your driving test????

Don’t have an instructor for those “few lessons” you “need” and the use of a car just so you can pass?!

If this sounds familiar, it’s worth noting WE ARE NOT HIRE CARS.

Driving instructors are well aware of the many people who book practical tests and then rush around asking every instructor in the local area hoping someone will take you. We get messages from you several times a week! The answer is always the same-no!

So let’s look at why you are you finding it hard to get an instructor to take you on….

The truth is we are busy, and booked up weeks if not months in advance.
We therefore do not take pupils we don’t know and haven’t trained, we concentrate on those we do know and are prepared to put the required hours in.

Why you ask??
Because it takes more than a “few lessons” to assess your ability for a start. We then have to spend time to correct the faults and ensure that you have enough time to practise driving to the safe standard that is required to pass.
We then have to ensure you can consistently drive safely and INDEPENDENTLY WITHOUT HELP….

So hopefully now you can start to see why your kind offer of a “few lessons” is often rejected.

I have never met a student yet who has been able to meet the standard required to pass a test in two lessons, and I would invite any instructor to correct me if I’m wrong.

So why have you booked this test?
Maybe you're in a rush to pass- I get it we want it done ASAP.
Also, it’s expensive learning to drive isn’t it, lessons are costly we understand that, but so is a funeral….

Ask yourself this…(and be honest)….
Would you jump into a pool knowing you aren’t able to swim yet….in the hope you might just survive?
Course you wouldn’t!

So then why book (and or a sit) a test you’ve not prepared for, aren’t at the standard to pass and could risk other peoples life’s all to “have a go” - yes I’m talking about the examiner who has to sit next to you fearing for his life, and the other road users you’ve put at risk all to “have a go”?

So please - if you’ve made it this far…don’t book a test until you have spoke with an instructor willing to take you.
Your blocking up an already back logged system, and will no doubt have to cancel that test when you fail to find an instructor to “hire”.
Making it even more difficult for people who are ready to book a test.

Well it was a cool morning and lots of moisture on the car windows.
As part of my checks I also added squeegeeing all my car windows and lights windows.
However to say that I was disappointed with a female driving an SUV, with her side windows steamed up, pulling out in front of me and causing me to brake hard, is an understatement.
It takes only a few minutes to clear your windows, so get it done.
The law is on the side of the injured party in this circumstance especially if dashcam footage is available
