Please take note on the following changes to booking practical driving tests 👇🏻

We’re putting learners in control of their car driving test bookings 🚘

If you’ve got a booking or you’ll be looking for a test soon, make a note of these dates 📅

31 March 2026 – only 2 changes can be made to a booking

12 May 2026 – only learners are allowed to book a test and make changes

9 June 2026 – learners can move their booked test only to nearby centres

By changing who can book car and change driving tests, we’re aiming to reduce the re-selling of driving tests, giving the power back to learners 💪

This morning on GMB - A campaign to admit driving instructors onto the ‘position of trust’ list, where we (driving instructors) should receive more severe penalties for engaging in any inappropriate behaviour with students under the age of 18.

As an Approved Driving Instructor, I fully support this move.

We are mandated to be in the DBS scheme and, additionally in Scotland, the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme, but that won’t prevent weirdos grooming until they are actually caught!

If you are being subjected to any inappropriate behaviour by your driving instructor DO NOT remain quiet! You can complain directly to the DVSA or the Police.

This image is such a simple but powerful reminder of something most drivers think they understand… but often do not apply properly.

Your mirrors do not show you everything.

The rear view mirror gives you a narrow, central picture of what is directly behind.

Your left and right mirrors widen that picture.

But those red areas?

Those are your blind spots.

They are real.
They are bigger than people think.
And they are exactly where motorcyclists, cyclists and small cars disappear.

Peripheral vision helps.
Mirror checks help.
But neither replaces a proper shoulder check before changing lane or moving off.

Too many collisions happen because someone says,
“I did not see them.”

The truth is often:
You looked.
You just did not look properly.

Mirrors are information.
A glance over your shoulder is confirmation.

If you are relying only on mirrors, you are guessing.

And guessing at speed is not driving.
It is gambling.

Get ready for the driving test booking rule changes. 🚗👇

From 31 March 2026, learner drivers and approved driving instructors (ADIs) will only be able to make 2 changes to a practical car driving test booking.

A change includes:
- changing the date or time
- changing the test centre
- swapping a test between 2 learners

If you’re an ADI, we’d encourage you to make sure your pupils only book their test when they’re ready to take it and in a location they can easily travel to.

Calum, I am so proud of you and the effort you put in to get this mornings result. I know how much your licence will change your life. Good luck with your career, I know you’ll be a huge success. 🚙💨

I would also like to thank Calum’s Dad and sister for all the extra practice. It always makes the difference. 💐

I though it was worth sharing this training video by North Yorkshire Police as we have seen ‘Blue Light’ training and testing in and around Stornoway this week which has raised a lot of questions from my learners about what to do if an emergency service vehicle approaches from behind:

▶️ Don’t panic!

▶️ Pull over if it is safe to do so - not onto the pavement/bend/brow of a hill.

▶️ If there isn’t any safe places to pull over, keep driving at your normal speed until a safe space is found.

▶️ The Emergency Service driver will make the judgement to overtake when safe - don’t try and make that decision for them!

Arwen, your determination to gain your full licence has been inspirational. Taking only 3 months to pass is exceptional. Good luck with the future, I know you’ll be a huge success 🚙💨

I would also like to thank Arwen’s parents for all the extra practice you were able to give her, it really paid off today! Also to Jayne Macrea Driving school for giving Arwen extra lessons while I was away on holiday. What a team you all are 💐
