There’s no point indicating if you’re in a turn right only lane! 🤷🏼‍♂️

Well here’s why I don’t agree with that statement! ❌
-
Firstly, your indicator isn’t for you, it’s for others to see. If you’re approaching a junction like this, then adding a signal before the lanes split can massively add value to vehicles behind you letting them know where you intend to position.
-
You’ve also got to think about other road users, cyclists, pedestrians etc may or may not know it’s a turn right only lane or the markings may be obscured so an indicator is a very visible sign of intent which again adds value.
-
If you’re also not going to mislead anyone else by having the indicator on then it does no harm even if your road position is obvious where you’re turning.
-
In takeaway there’s always 2 important things to consider with an indicator;

1. Does it or could it add value and info to other road users?

2. Could it be misleading or give unclear signals for my intentions.

If you ask yourself these two questions then your indicating can become much more useful and effective.

Could this collision have been avoided with some better planning and awareness?

Why 10 and 2 is Outdated? 😵
-
Airbag Risk: When airbags deploy, they explode outward at high speeds. Having your hands high at 10 and 2 can catch your forearms and forcefully punch your own hands or arms into your face.
-
Loss of Power Steering: The 10 and 2 method was created for older cars that lacked power steering. Drivers needed leverage high up on the wheel to physically turn it. Modern cars have power steering, so you do not need that extra leverage. 🚙
-
Vehicle Stability Consensus: 10 and 2 also predated widespread seatbelt use, serving partly to brace the body during hard stops. 🚘

“Driving standards are awful these days because of slack instructors” 🤦🏼‍♂️

I hear this on social media a lot but today I saw someone probably in their 50’s take this exact line around this roundabout.. not a single indicator was used and I would probably guess not much mirror/blind spot work either.

Only cut across 4 lanes in total 😱

Do you signal or not? ✅❌

This always is a bone of contention amongst drivers. Following the road ahead (taking the second exit) on a mini roundabout would you use a left signal at the point of the blue cross to show you’re exiting the roundabout?
-
The Highway Code says mini roundabouts should be approached in the same way as a normal roundabout so rules don’t change however there is often less space to manoeuvre and less time to signal.

Some road layouts instantly strike fear and uncertainty into drivers but all the info you need to tackle these road situations is there for you.

This roundabout always bugs me with its markings. 🤯😰
-
On the approach every lane states M27 so basically you can use any one of 3 lanes to take the 2nd exit which if you didn’t know the roundabout and haven’t used it before is always a bonus.
-
But once you’ve exited the roundabout it then splits into 4 lanes with 2 being available for M27 east and 1 for M27 west, this normally causes a lot of movement and sometimes a 2 lane move is needed.
-
Would it not make sense to try and allow road users to determine lane position as early as possible by simply adding WEST or EAST on the lane markings on the approach?
-
What do you think? 🤔💭
